Need opinion about hernia surgery from anyone who has had one
    #18762433 - 08/27/13 03:06 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I've been experiencing pains that comes and goes around my navel for a while now. I've since been advised by my doctor that it is a case of inguinal hernia and told to make time for surgery. I've been reading up on this for a couple of days now.

My concerns are about the complications that might arise from surgery. Whether to go for the open mesh technique or laparoscopy. With mesh technique, I've read at several sites about how complications have at times arisen for people, in some cases a few years after surgery.

I've also been informed about another repair technique for hernia surgery that is slightly unconventional, but repeated for many years with success where they do natural tissue repair rather than mesh repair. If anyone has experience with hernia, please leave a reply. Also, some tips on recovery after surgery too would be nice.

I had an inguinal hernia about 3.5-4 years ago. I had a bulge that would protrude in certain positions or when lifting, but which i was able to manually reset into my body.

I was recommended to get laproscopic surgery and it was no big deal. I scheduled it during a planned layoff at work, went into the hospital, they knocked me out, did their thing for less than an hour and i woke up with a small degree of pain and milked them for painkillers.

I wasn't allowed to leave the hospital until i showed them that i could pee. Frankly, standing and peeing was painful, all i wanted to do was lay down. I ended up recovering for 1 full day and then went out for a weekend camping trip with my friends, which involved some strenuous hiking. Although it wasn't the ideal situation, it worked out well for me.

I wasn't allowed to lift anything heavy (25lbs) for 1 or 2 weeks and then nothing heavier than 50lbs for another 1 or 2.

Healing was fine, and the scars are small. Very non intrusive.

The mesh method sounds very painful and more prone to problems, imo.

I have the Mesh. The surgery itself wasnt a big deal. And the mesh hurt while I was waiting for it to get intertwined with my muscles and while it loosened up. But now im fine  Not to mention its stronger than ever!

Sometimes I still feel it and it gives mild pain VERY briefly. And I have a scar. But its nothing a MAN cant handle :morningtoke: relax, its a pretty minor repair. There are people who go psychotic over a course of antibiotics. Adverse reactions can happen to all kinds of trivial crap. Cant handle it? Live in a bubble :bored:
