Spent brewing grains as substrate ?
    #11316798 - 10/25/09 05:22 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I've recently gotten started in growing mushrooms. I'm currently using the PF tek, but studying the more advanced techniques. Since I'm a home brewer, I have plenty of spent brewing grain to dispose of after each batch of beer. Does anyone have any experience using this as a substrate ? Would the fact that the sugars have been leeched out the grains make them unsuitable ? It would be perfect for me if this worked out well since I can get double use out of my barley.

Might be a useful additive to bulk substrate, if prepared properly. Might not.

I brew myself and have thought about this a little. Although the carbohydrates have been removed from the barley, the husks could possibly be useful as an additive to increase pore space, if the moisture content was right. I would probably dry them, and add a small amount to spawn or bulk substrate. I would probably also pressure cook them, since brewing won't get your temps high enough to pasteurize (unless you do a super-long mashout).

Someone else with more experience can chime in on how useful barley husks would be to a growing mushroom, but I think you'd be better off composting spent grains.

Il try to break my habit of opening old threads...
But after a portobello and Mycenae and inkcap test, yes.
Yes spent brewing grain works. No pasturizing, I just threw a print in and let it work.
Notes: it takes FOREVER to colonize, but it will fruit quick.
Also, the grain will dry out very quickly.
Furthermore, I've done this with 3 species, and cubes nor any actives were not what I tested this with
But considering the variety that all fruited quite handsomely, I'd say that spent grain would be good for a bulk sub if mixed 50/50 with verm. But not as a good as rye or popcorn to start it off with

There's nothing wrong with bumping an old post as long as your post is adding something to the conversation, which it did.
