Germinating Calea Zacatechichi
    #18747606 - 08/23/13 02:31 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I while back I posted about growing dream herb, but was struggling to find a good vendor. I recently found a vendor that I was already ordering from that seemed reliable <SNIP>. I have done a bit of research on the best way to germinate my Calea Zacatechichi seeds. I want to get started while my seeds are fresh.

The most promising method I have found thus far was:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17557165

The author had 40-60% germination rate with this method. The op used leds for the necessary lighting. At my current residence, I don't have any of my electronics equipment and thus can not use that method. I would still like to get started with planting tomorrow. Here is my plan:
1. Put seedling on paper towel or coffee filter.
2. Use spray bottle to dampen the seeds and paper towel.
3. Put paper towel into plastic food wrap bag.
4. Allow seedlings to get the first 4-6 hours of daylight in a small window, with partial shade.
5. At the same time each day move the cuttings away from the window into no light (this will also, force me to check the dampness of the paper towel)
6. When seedlings have sprouted, move with tooth pick and place on top of soil.

I am hoping that the sunlight will be sufficient in the germinating process. Does that sound like an okay plan?

Thanks.

I used this method <SNIP> and it worked really well. I had the LEDs set up in such a way that the seeds were getting daylight, too. If my experience is normal I imagine you'll want to get them as much light as you possibly can without the LEDs.

I germinated them lightly pressed into good soil that I misted almost every day -- those things really need to stay moist.

Good luck!

Thanks. I suppose I will leave them in the windows light all day then. Thanks.

Unfortunately I couldn't get a heat source for any of them. I was considering just putting a metal tray under neith of the paper towel, so it would at least be warmer during the day.

Currently I have some being started on paper towels and coffee filters. Some are sitting in water for 6 hours before being placed on a paper towel. And they are all being placed in different windows/light locations. Hopefully at least one will root.

I will post back if I have any success.

Thanks for the replies

Yeah, the different conditions seem smart -- good luck!

For what it's worth, I bought everything I needed for RegurK NauR's clever setup (the breadboard, LEDs, resistors, etc.) for under $30, and I'm already using it again for a different germination. I can tell you exactly which sites I ordered the parts from if these trials don't work for you.

Thanks for the reply. Did you have a similarly high germination rate to Regurk Naur?

I actually have all the equipment for his setup, but all of my electronics are at my other residence :frown:. I didn't want my seeds to age too much, so I'm just counting on the sun to hook me up with at least one germination .

Yup, it worked really well. I don't know exactly how many seeds I put in there but I wound up with five healthy little plants, and this is after a few uninformed trials of no germinations and a whole bunch of wasted seeds.

I think the real key is patience -- keep watering them. It took at least a few weeks for anything to sprout up and a couple seeds took even longer than that.
