Possible Gymnopilus
    #18763632 - 08/27/13 12:10 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I stumbled upon some mushrooms growing on a tree stump in a wooded area of CT.

Could these possibly be Gymnopilus Luteus or another type of Gym or something else totally?

They are most likely Armillaria.

Thanks! Too bad its not a gym though

Oh, has anyone tried these? I heard they are edible but may cause stomach upsets in some

I haven't tried them. I've read that some people par-boil them, then discard the water and sautee the mushrooms.  Some people really seem to like them, but the only time I find them is a time of year when I find a lot of mushrooms to eat.

A. mellea. You shouldn't boil mushrooms unless you are making soup, IMO. Honey mushrooms in general are used for soup.

I've sautéed them and they are nothing to write home about when prepared that way. I haven't tried soup yet.
