Death at Burning Man Festival

BLACK ROCK DESERT, Nevada (AP) -- Artists, spiritualists and old hippies at the annual counterculture Burning Man festival decamped from their temporary desert community following a peaceful gathering marred by a series of accidents.
A record 30,500 people turned some of the nation's remotest real estate into a hedonistic utopia where everything is recycled and where drugs, clothes and inhibitions are optional.
The festival, which combines wilderness camping and an eclectic mix of art and music, started in 1986 and is held each Labor Day weekend on a dry lake bed in the Black Rock Desert, about 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada.
The burning of a 40-foot neon effigy marks the climax of the Burning Man festival.
This year's festival was not without its accidents.
On Saturday, Katharine Lampman, 21, of Belmont, California, was killed when she accidentally fell under the wheels of an "art car," which is similar to a parade float.
Five people were hospitalized following two plane crashes at the festival's temporary air strip. Two festival-goers involved in a Saturday crash were listed in critical but stable condition at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, while two others were in serious but stable condition.
Both crashes, which involved Beechcraft BE-35 airplanes, were under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
On Friday, another small plane crashed at the airstrip while attempting to take off, authorities said. One person involved in that wreck suffered back injuries and two other people sustained minor injuries, officials said.
The creation and destruction of what for a time was Nevada's seventh largest city was part of the annual ritual that evolved from a spontaneous San Francisco beach celebration of the 1986 summer solstice.
That year, an eight-foot wooden effigy was burned. The one ignited late Saturday towered eight stories: a 40-foot stylized wooden man highlighted in blue neon, atop a 40-foot-tall Aztec-style wood and canvas pyramid.
The torching ceremony included dozens of dancers, twirling flaming hoops and chains to the frantic beat of dozens of drums. Flame-belching bicycles and fantastic vehicles passed as neon-green laser beams crisscrossed overhead.
Organizers of the seven-square-mile encampment intended this year's "beyond belief" theme to reflect humankind's search for a deeper, spiritual meaning, though on a "playful" scale.
Reflecting the Burning Man's counterculture, techno-edge roots, most of the camps poked fun at organized religion, and many tend toward more sensual diversions often involving body paint or bondage.

That's too bad that lady died...
I'm going to see my friend in a few days, who will be returning from BM, so I'll ask him about it...

Thank you for that perspective
Too bad the media would rather try to make it look like drugs or the 'crowd' are to blame for people getting hurt or dying.. Even though people die at disneyland and other less drugged places

An event with that many people is bound to have a death or two. I personally would feel safer going to burning man than riding space mountain at Disney.

> A record 30,500 people
Wow.. I remember back when those had just 10,000 to 12,000 max. It is almost sad to see it get so large... more people = more money = more police = more problems = more bleh...

the taint is painfully apparent in the article.
enough with the sexual debauchery angle.
it sounds like their trying to turn it into a pervy drug fair instead of a good-natured gathering.

LOL well that's the media for ya. I would love to go - next year possibly. It costs alot of money though if you're gonna get all into it, and I don't have much to spare. Plus coming from my location to the desert is a pretty long hike!
Awww dont be a Wussy
ive gone there for 4 years straight, and ive been unemployed for 2 of them, and i live on the EAST COAST! it will cost you about 1000$ if u wanna do it in style, it can be done for much cheaper... but i like to live like a king... PM me if u are intersted in going, i will hook you up with a GOOD camp. you wont be alone...
its a life changing event.... you will meet real people make friends you will realise that you are not the only one. there is probably a group of burners in your area and u dont even know about it..... we are everywhere.... MUHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA
BTW, people die every year... IMO not enuff people die anymore... shit, burningman just ISINT dangerous enuff anymore..... back in the day you really had to be on your toes... i remember my 1st year, wandering about with my head in the clouds, then i look up and there are about 10 flaming balls flying towards my head.... and another time when i stumbled into someone;s firework patch.. and just about everyyear i set my head on fire a couple of times. (im a fire spinner, it happens....)
danger is a great part of the event.. it makes it REAL no gay ropes saying dont climb on this or that, no stupid signs saying "dont touch this, its hot" commen sense people, if u dont have it, dont go to burningman.. noone is gonna baby you there, if u wanna put your head in teh dragon's mouth, dont be suprised when it bites your head off....
and yes, its the GREATIST place in the world to trip
sigh, i could go on and on....
if any eastcoasters would like to go to a cool gathering check out "playa del fuego" its happening this october in deleware its a nice east coast event, where the burners go when its not time for burningman
PM me for details.. or just google..

I for sure wanna go check it out.. We have sort of a smaller version of it here called Om Festival.. festivals like this are sort of training grounds for poeple to activate all the positive energy and actually create something.. It never really ended this year and all of the omies meet at least once a week for drumming and fire spinning meets.. We all love each other like family and that kind of thing is hard to come by.. The world could really use more of these types of things.. Here's some pics of this years.. http://www.omfestival.com/ommb/viewtopic.php?t=578&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
