What can you do to help the environment?
    #18763086 - 08/27/13 09:42 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Many people know we are facing a profound global ecological crisis. Many people also feel totally helpless to do anything about it.

However, there are some things you can do.

1. Green consumerism- buy post-consumer recycled products such as toilet paper and paper towels, to reduce the strain on virgin resources. Look for biodegradable products, phosphate free detergents, and be aware that much seemingly environmentally friendly products are "greenwashing", marketed to seem ecologically friendly but are not really. Don't just buy things with a green bottle, read the claims and see if they check out. Again, post consumer recycled is good.

2. Volunteer- volunteer your time with a local environmental organization. With a bit of looking you can find one, and they need your help!

3. Donate- make a regular monthly donation (or a one time donation) to a worthy environmental charity that is doing good work.

4. Write or phone your legal representative, and tell them what you think they should or should not do, environmentally speaking.

5. Educate yourself on the issues. Do some research. Maybe get a degree in an environmental field of study, or just do some internet research to find out what is going on, what is being done, and what needs to be done.

6. Talk to your friends and family. Spread the word. Network and organize. Form your own grassroots ecological movement.

7. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

8. Plant your own vegetable garden, install solar panels, install rainwater barrels to catch water (to water your garden), insulate your house better, use passive and active solar, geothermal if you can afford it, and generally try to get as off the grid as possible and reduce your own personal ecological footprint.

9. If possible, avoid using a personal vehicle as much as possible. Walk, bike, bus, carpool etc.

10. Sign online or paper petitions. There are online networks that constantly inform you of worthwhile petitions, sign a few a day. Some also have a button you can click each day to generate money to conserve wildlife etc.

Do all ten of these things before you complain there is nothing you can do. Once you have done all ten you will probably have gained the knowledge, contacts, networks, skills and experience to realize you can do even more.

What do you do to help the environment? What am I missing on my list?

I don't see the volunteering or making donations as important, just live a clean lifestyle.

Also, practice Leave no Trace principles. http://lnt.org/learn/7-principles.

These principles are being taught around the world; currently, New Zealand is considering making them a nation-wide credence. Take care of your print on the Earth so that future humans can enjoy nature just the way we do!

I plant a bunch of trees every year for an environmental charity, but I do it for money. I have mixed feelings about volunteering. If you want a job done right, pay someone to do it. The volunteer planting events are mostly for raising public awareness, a small crew of people who know what they're doing can get more done than dozens or hundreds of people who showed up for a day event and need to be corralled basically.

Volunteering can be crucial though. Have you ever been immersed in deep wilderness? Sometimes the trailblazes are the most important thing around for you to know how to stay on trail. And lots of them were created in the early 1900's with volunteer programs.

That is cool, but IMO if something is worth doing then it's nice if someone can make a decent living while doing it.

If you can find a job doing environmentally beneficial work, that is awesome and can be considered number 11 on the list. However even if you do good eco-work for your 9-5, you can still volunteer as well.

lol@ many people know... Ever heard of cycles? What made the Earth heat up and freeze again thousands of years ago? Pollution? hahah  Keep drinking the kool aid. I mean come on. There is no actual scientific evidence of global warming. All brought on by tree hugging Libtards.

You're the first person in this thread to mention global warming. Pollution isn't real now because the earth goes through cycles? Do you have any actual knowledge in any kind of environmental science?

Hey guys, it's okay to dam rivers and chop down forests and let thousands of species go extinct, global warming isn't real!

Ok, I'll say this again, you're the one talking about global warming! We're simply talking about pollution, see the difference here? Do you really need proof that we are damaging the ecosystem beyond repair? Because there's tons of it.

That stuff could be replaced with mushroom mycelium grown into blocks, cups, etc.

You're arguing against a position that nobody has advocated here. IMO it makes no difference if climate change is influenced by what we do, all the fossil fuels are going to be burned regardless. I plant forests because I enjoy spending time in them.

this

im really good about not tossing my ciggs in 90% of situations, but my mom's car has no ashtray  and i cant out ciggs in the car to put in a bag like i can outside

cigarette buts fuck up water systems big time, i dont remember 100% of what i read , but its something like it retards/kills some small bug(i forget the name) that is the bottom of the ladder in rivers/lakes ect, so it works its way up the food chain fucking up everything

for the longest time id, pick up at least 2 cigarette buts for every one i could remember tossing, i figures if everyone did that, itd clean up pretty fast, but i fell out of that habit

also i got a question, i have one of the most evasive annoying plants messing up the forest around here

buck thorn, the berries are laxitves, the birds eat them and poop them out everywhere, and the plants come up the next year if you chop them down, *and* they spread by runners

it crowds out all the native plants, and makes parts unpassible it grows so densely

i dont know what i can do about it, seems impossible to stop:sad:

Generally I figure it's pretty pointless to try to stop invasive species by pulling them up etc. Sounds like that one is at least a food source for something.

Invasives are rough. No matter how hard you try, they'll come back if they are introduced and the environment is appropriate for growth.

I don't know if I fully buy into the idea that non-native invasives are something "bad" that should be remedied if possible. There have always been invasive species, and their descendants are the ones we now think of as being "native." If they can't hold their own against new competitors in the future, that's just how things go sometimes.

i know a purgative is technically medicinal, but meh

Consume less - less garbage , less environment destruction from overconsumption (eat less, buy less)
Recycle batteries (save in a jar, then once in a while recycle them)
Freeze Ryebread/toastbread , lasts 5 times longer easily, so no slices get thrown out
Pick up large pieces of trash in nature i.e. or anything you see floating around
Ask your friends to not throw their trash in nature when there is a garbage can 20ft from there (show them the miracles of nature by growing plants at home, so they get an appreciation of nature too)
Don't drive a car unless you absolutely need one(I don't in the city, trains everywhere)
Give old clothing to charity

many possibilities...

plant plants in your garden and house, they take your co2 and turn to o2

plant mushrooms everywhere outside where you walk :-D, they help the plants often by supplying nutrients, and the plants help them + they're pretty (most people will notice)

appreciate everything you have always, then you don't need as much
work to live, don't live to work, then you just need to earn to live and be happy , and you probably don't consume as much
appreciate nature :-) then you got everything you need always

Hybrids are arguably not that great for the environment anyway, sure they use less gas but you have a giant mass of batteries that must be disposed of later.

I agree that choosing not to have children is one of the most environmentally beneficial choices anyone can make. Every child you have increases your ecological footprint by 100%. I support and applaud everyone who chooses not to reproduce. Plus then you can adopt and take care of a child who needs love and support, thus doing something food for humanity and nature.

Thank you everyone for contributing your good ideas to this thread!

Consume less, reproduce less.

Educate yourself and then educate others.

Donate to a worthy cause. It feels good, its good karma, and it helps them do good work.

I donate to green peace, the world wildlife fund and the international fund for animal welfare.

I volunteer for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness society.

I have a vegetable garden. I don't own or operate a car. I wrote a book on the causes of and solutions to the global ecological crisis.

I also support and applaud people who choose not to eat meat. If you do it right it can have an environmental benefit. I currently eat meat but someday I will get my shit together and go vegetarian in a healthy, ecologically friendly way.

I called the prime minister of Canada and left him a message today (part of a greenpeace action). It was so easy. I am going to start doing it regularly about various environmental issues. It feels good, try it! Its easy.

Write to your representatives in government. And try and find a job where you do ecologically beneficial work.

Kudos to the poster who works for greenpeace!

I know I am not doing nearly enough, but I really am trying.

When I move to my new house in a few weeks I am going to get started on serious food gardening and water barrel saving. I have two huge apple trees in my back yard and along with the vegetable garden I hope to produce a larger portion of my own food.

Its fun and exciting. I am also going to do some cool upcycling projects, like I saw an awesome way to make a sweet herb garden out of old milk jugs. Stuff like that is awesome.

Keep it up everybody! Your rock!

And not believing in global warming has nothing to do with the fact that we do have an ecological crisis. Its not all about global warming at all.

We need to ban things like bottom trawling, toxic waste dumping, deforestation, etc. None of that has anything to do with global warming.

too late. worlds fucked.

(but obviously people should do what they can to lessen the impact to the Earth, but if you're seeking perfection Moonshoe, NEVER ever... EVER gonna happen.)

Ps: toxic waste dumping is already illegal. i agree with you on the fracking projects, those need to be put down.

84% goes towards the actual campaigns, 15% goes towards fundraising, and 1% goes to management (I.e. offices electric bill and all that stuff)

Then I drive away in my solar powered piece of shit car, cool stuff man.

And then I go kill a bitch because the flaming orb in the sky told me to do so, and I don't know, oppress a few minorities here and there in the name of nuclear fusion?

Religion is fun.

Ok. Now why did some of the founding members leave and start different organizations?

Not trying to interrogate you, just curious.

I believe some wanted to start more radical organizations such as Earth First! which were more militant and willing to break the law to save the environment.
