Gymnopilus ID confirmation
    #18760079 - 08/26/13 03:36 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Species 1 on hardwood:

Species 2 on conifer:

Both species smell phenolic or almond like and taste extremely bitter. I noticed some very small spots of blue-green in the field that I can't seem to find anymore.

Second are all gyms man.

First ones ( one showing gills is tough to say.) - the other on right looks like a old gym but also hard to say.

Second batch looks like g luteus. But the conifer is odd part of the find.

For what it's worth, I think they are probably Gym's I think they look similar to Gymnopilus penetrans or something like that, unless they show bluing or green'ing whatever its called.

Thanks for the help guys :super:

This mushroom from the second cluster is definitely showing some blue/green bruising after some fridge time:

I might be wrong about the conifer-It looked like it, but I'm terrible with ID'ing decaying wood and now that I think about it, there were probably more hardwoods than conifers in that area. Sorry about the shitty cell phone pics. I had some cool habitat shots, but I managed to lose my camera when my dog took off in the middle of this sweet chunk of old growth forest with no trails. :facepalm3: I'm going back tomorrow to see if I can find it, but we finally got a good downpour...

C'est la vie

Yeah that's probably an active gym, you might want to save a small piece of it for microscopy, sorta looks like Gymnopilus aeruginosus maybe. Cool find either way. Enjoy them

Are you sure about the conifer? Looks a hell of a lot like G. luteus. Are the lamellae really that red/ purple?

No, on second thought it was probably on hardwood, but I get confused looking at decaying wood. I don't think there were many conifers in the area. The first round of pictures is with natural light and shows the colors much more accurately than the one showing the blue/green bruising. That pic was taken under fluorescent light with a cell phone camera. The lamellae and gills are more yellow-orange than red but the bruising color is pretty accurate. I just couldn't dial in the white balance

You can see the color temp i up high to highlight the bruising... you can see it in the towels if im not mistaken. Could be wrong though. Either way it shows what it needs to and i think its sexy!
