Installing Ubuntu on Acer Chromebook

Let me start by saying that I really fucked up by buying this paperweight, but now I'm stuck with it and am trying to make it at least usable for something other than web browsing.
So, I have the Acer C710-2583 with the 16gb SSD drive and am wanting to install Ubuntu in hopes of having a functional desktop. I guess my question is that is there sufficient space for this program? I do not wish to continue using the Chrome OS and am willing to dedicate all space to Ubuntu. Any ideas aside from simply throwing this thing out the window?

Ubuntu only needs about 1GB IIRC for a 'full' install
They recommend 5GB free for your docs and stuff - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
So you are good.

one thing to consider is both chrome and vlc will not run as root but there is a simple hex fix for this . just google it. should turn up both edits and instructions.

Well, ubuntu was working fine until I got this error message: Package power limit notification
Anyone have any clue what this means? My chromebook appears to be dead

Google root it pretty much means you rule the computer, what you say (type) goes with ubuntu your commands are preceded by su then you get asked for your super user password. My suggestion would be to try some live distros till you find one you like. Ubuntu is pretty much cotton candy windows style stuff. there are 5 or 6 main distros out there. For example Ubuntu is Debian based, Fedora is RedHat based, Vector Is Slackware based. etc etc. Poke around till you find one you like. Running live is the easiest way to test distros.

I tried running Ubuntu 10.4 on a 4Gb partition (iirc; might also have been 7Gb) and it turned out to be waaaaay too small after a couple of months. Don't go there; reserve at least 10Gb for it.
