No Growth Across Three Batches of Rye Seed from Different Spores
    #18758762 - 08/26/13 08:11 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hey there! Thank you for coming . And yes, I <did> see a similar thread about ten days ago. I read through it and it had little relevant information.

I have had great success in the past with rye, but it's always been Organic berries from Whole Foods. Having seen Violet's seed tek, I wanted to try it out, so I went a picked up some from Home Depot; the most standard, bare seeds as I could. It's 99% rye grass seed (90% Gulf Annual, 9% Charger II perennial*), about 1% inert matter, no sort of coating.

*PVP protected variety. I was under the idea this has to do with inability to propagate themselves so one must keep buying seeds.

Self-healing injection port lids w/ SFDs.

The first batch (8-4, GT) w/ plastic lids has a bit extra gypsum by mistake (mixed dry with seed before pour), prepped per Violet's tek; boiling coffee/water, dumping right into a big tote of my seed, stirred, strained after six hours and PCed.

Next two batches (8-11, Ps. galindoi; and 8-19, B+) were prepped a-la RR; add dry seed, pinch of gypsum, shake, add coffee/water to each jar and let sit for two hours before PCing.

All jars were shaken after PCing (some twice) to redistribute moisture. After cooling completely, all were inoculated with about 1 CC spore solution on respective dates (8-4, 8-11, 8-19). First batch PCed for 90 minutes, other two for 60.

All jars inoculated in a SAB in which I have had absolutely zero success. I used to use a smaller tote with arm holes just melted out, which apparently may have worked better?

First batch I mistakenly inoculated directly on top of the grain, instead of toward the side. Galindoi jars filled somewhat sparsely. It is mostly the flash that gives these grains their whitish sheen, especially in the GT picture.

What can I do? Try to shake some of the GT jars a little to see if spores germinated but grew straight down? Is there anything I can change about my prep or materials that would be better? Thank you again!

So im assuming ou soaked these overnight and steeped them for a while.  With that being done how long ago did you inoculate?  You are most likely being impatient.  I have just recently did my first inoculation of WBS using Docs tek and am seeing results now after 4 days.  Secondly follow directions, slow down, and make what your doing enjoyable not a rush.

Read, brother. I soaked the first for six hours in steeping dilute coffee all together. I soaked the other two batches for two hours in their jars, exactly how RR does his grass seed.

I onculated 8-4, 8-11, and 8-19. I'm not very concerned the 8-19 jars haven't taken off. But more than two and three weeks for the others sets of jars? Seems amiss.

I do enjoy doing this. I did follow directions. I am very thorough and do try to be patient; I am just seeking input. Don't paint me as a character just because you hang around the boards -- I do too.

Im not you were statingvthat you messed up twice once on the amount of gypsum then the way you inoculated.  i was just suggesting that you slow down.  And i was kinda confused on the soaking but after a re read i found what you were doing.

You're right. My apologies. Yes, adding extra gypsum was a hasty maneuver, but one that I believe to be mostly harmless, just wasteful. From what I researched, the general consensus is it is benign. There's now just an overabundance of calcium and sulphate, yeah?

"PVP Protected" is a sort of trademark for plants. It means it is some sort of genetically modified plant that the company that modified it put a trademark on. It's sad that companies are allowed to trademark nature these days :frown:

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess maybe the spores were no good? Hopefully you purchased from a reliable vendor (please don't mention the vendor name).

PVP can also mean that it has been genetically modified to slow or even stop mold and fungis from growing on it.  It may have a resistance

I agree with FooMan.

And why are you doing grass seed, especially for your galindoi?

Rye berries are much nicer to clean and prep and they also produce better.

That has nothing to do with the "PVP" or "PVPA" title. Of course a PVP seed/plant could have been modified to be anti fungal, but making the statement that PVP may also mean anti-fungal is misleading.

I did not say "may also" i said "can mean" meaning there are types of PVP's that are anti mold anti fungal.  Nothing was misleading just misinterpreted.
