Telling a health care pro, what drugs do for you
    #18758726 - 08/26/13 07:51 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So in reality I don't know what's wrong with my head/sinuses/right nostril/ears. There's a serious congestive issue, foods make it worse in my throat, I'm extremely healthy and only sometime exercise can clear up my head for the brief duration. What's acid mushrooms Molly but never pot seem to do are wake me up and open up my sinuses, total clearheaded perfect breathing many others enjoy normally. Shit sucks I hear my golden voice come out only to go back to gargly slight raspiness when congestion comes back. Sprays don't work well. Can I tell someone what a trip or roll does for my head and for a little bit afterwards until the old way of feeling returns? Will I get in trouble?

I may not be correct, but I would think they could /would report that to your insurance provider. I mean, they will if you tell them you drink or smoke cigarettes so I'm just assuming they would. I doubt you would get in trouble, but years down the line your insurance may say "well remember a few years back when you said you took recreational drugs - that's probably why you have cancer " or something ridiculous like that lol

I think telling anyone else about any of your medical history and information would be violating HIPPA rules. An MD can lose his license over that.

But you know how if you go to the hospital and they ask if you booze or smoke? They will tell your insurance that

But yeah I'm not too sure what a MD would do, probably nothing

If you somehow found a very open-minded, accepting intelligent doctor then maybe mentioning it could be beneficial. Otherwise, I would not recommend it. My experience has only been bad. I've been open and honest, so that the professional has maximum information and can provide the best response, and it hasn't helped. I've noticed their perception of me change as they characterise me as a 'drug user' and treat me differently, with less sympathy, I'd say (I'm only talking about cannabis in this instance).

On the other hand, being honest about it with an open-minded receptive psychologist has been beneficial (once again, cannabis use).

So it depends on the professional, I believe. I'd guess that medical professionals are less likely to be accepting and helpful with the fact, as opposed to psychologists, for instance. I'd recommend caution and not assuming they will appreciate your honesty and want to assist you regardless of your life choices (as they should).

That depends on which state you live in.

Quite a few say only doctors have to follow HIPPA guidelines.

That means if you tell the EMT (dude in the ambulance) or the person who answers 911 what you took during an emergency, you've messed up and are free to tell the cops whatever.

All medical professionals have to follow HIPPA, at least in the US.

OP, the doctors won't tell the insurance companies. Insurance companies are only informed about treatments & evaluations that they are being charged for. Even sharing information about things like substance use & mental health issues between different medical facilities requires consent.  Your main concern would be that telling the doctor would possibly impact any prescriptions down the line, say to painkillers. However, many medical professionals do see the difference between recreational and/or spiritual use, and abuse. Many have partaken themselves. They can never tell you that though.
