question about topping
    #18759865 - 08/26/13 02:46 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Two topping questions;

1. On my aluminium tray limed with white trash bag, when I spawn into it do I use the regular plastic lid it comes with or put aluminum over it till @ 100% colonization?

2. Would it be better to put a small layer of vermiculite on top when most of the pins are in for better water retention?

I personally use foil crimped tightly around the tray, I leave one corner slightly not fully tight for GE

Cubes do not require a casing usually.  I would need to know what exactly you are "spawning" to make a better call about that however. Straight grains intended for fruiting must be cased. Also, crumbled pf cakes usually call for a layer of verm.  If you are mixing your spawn to a bulk substrate like a coir or manure mixture, then no casing is needed, and I don't recommend them for first time bulk cultivators growing cubes anyway.  I do recommend being sure, if you are spawning to a bulk sub, that some of your spawn remains on top so the top colonizes quickly. There are a few benefits to this including protection of the substrate.  Lotta first timers are tempted to put a layer of bulk sub on top...which ends up just taking longer to finish colonizing.

This is interesting because it's opposite of what I've read in the past. Thank you for saying it.

I usually put just enough sub on top to kind of cover the grains for protection.

I have always questioned this in my mind because a fully colonized grain shouldn't need protection and the best protection would be a fast growing mycelium.

However, it seems that a sparse layer of grain on top would dry out. But perhaps grain dunking would help with that.

I will be sure to try what you said on my next run. Reading a TC saying what I was thinking drives it home.

There have been many discussions in the last six months or so, SJ.

Very few of us (that I know of) still use a top layer of substrate for their cubensis.

I certainly have not, for almost a year now. The grains will not "dry out," regardless of whether they are dunked or not

Now I see what I miss when I quit coming around.

I often thought it, but was afraid to try it. Thx.

I'm almost done colonizing a pint jar and two small glass cups, spawning into brf+verm.
I've read, buff don't remember were to put a small layer of verm on the surface after pinning has induced.. Right or wrong?

udnutsay: you doing crumble and case method   and as the name implies, you apply put a layer of verm on after you crumble it and lay into your tray.

Generally, you want to apply 1/4-1/2 inch of sterilized moistened verm, then you want to cover it again and let that verm colonize a bit, as you would  a normal casing. Then introduce into fruiting conditions.

Typically you want myc to poke thru the verm barely all over like threads, about 80%.  Then introduce into fruiting conditions. The goal isn't to fully colonize the verm layer. But to just see myc poking thru it barely all over

GL

I have seen this tek done probably 200 times. About 50% of the time the casing develops cobweb before the first harvest. GL!

I would pasteurize the casing material, not sterilize it, but thats just me.

Ok, so my bulk which will be brf+verm. Should I put in jars in the PC or should I just mix in a still air environment?

No you don't. One reason the PF tek is so popular is because it does not require investing in a PC.

My bad.  What i was trying to convey is that you cant just use brf like verm it needs to be processed

and i usually don't say steam cause i have never used that process.  IMO if you can afford a PC get one and never use steam again.  It is too much of a shot in the dark sometimes.

No it isn't.

In the PF tek videos, even your idol RR himself shows how to steam-sterilize pf cakes.

It is tried and true.

But since you've never tried it, you wouldn't know, hey?

That is how i started growing.  And still use cakes but i don't like the variables that come with steaming.  Shouldn't use different sized jars cause they cause it to heat unevenly.  So much water escapes that you have to open it up and fillit with water of a lower temp causing you to lose your steady temp.  too many variables.  Shot in the dark.

1: Why do you say this has anything to do with using a regular pot vs pc?
They would heat unevenly even if pc'ed, it's just pure physics.

2) If you use a tight fitting lid, as the tek calls for, this is not a problem.
RR mentions it as it can be a real accident waiting to happen if some moron burned his kettle dry.
When I used badly fitting lids on my kettle, I filled a half gallon
Cola-bottle with water and put it on top of my lid.
Made it tight-fitting.

Why do you keep posting all this bad info.
No-one is following you solely to flame you, bad info is bad info.
