PF Cakes Slow Progress
    #18759168 - 08/26/13 10:36 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, just starting out with my first batch of PF Cakes.  Made a few mistakes early on and I'm seeing pretty slow progress.  Was wondering if there is anything I can do to speed things up.

Mistakes (?) I made were >
  - Went with normal mouth 1/2 pint ball jars instead of wide-mouth (couldn't find wide-mouth, since ordered some online)
  - Used a thicker verm layer on top - my thinking was that I had to keep the same amount of dried verm by volume, so therefore taller jar --> more length --> thicker verm layer.  Problem was when I went to inoculate I found that the needle barely reached to the bottom of the verm layer! so innoc points are right at the border.
  - Squeezed in way too much solution from the syringe before I realized what I was doing, used up my whole syringe on two jars.
  - Had the lids on the jars screwed on really tight.
  - Due to the shape of my lids, when I nail a hole from the top (rubber side) through the bottom, the lids are raised a bit off the ground and get bent.  The last batch, I nailed the other way, but then the spiky bits perforated my tinfoil when I was trying to wrap them..

Weather near my house was unseasonably cold for the first week, in the mid 60's, now has heated back up to the mid 70's, (up to 81 inside).

So after 6 days I was seeing zilch.  Now after 10 days and some warmer temperatures, I've seen growth for a few days.  One jar is probably about 30%, and the other just has a few small patches around the innoc points.

I've got two more batches of 2 jars each coming along but they are at least a week behind.

So will these jars work, or are they stalled ?  Anything I can do for them ?

First things first, dont rush the process, this is a very time consuming and patient project. Honestly, the verm might have soaked it up, but being you used more than 1cc a jar, the spores might have leaked down along the glass, if you innoced at an angle. Seeing as though you have '30%', its still multiplying.
That being said, I say place a black bag over the jars and dont peek for a week or two and just let it grow. The most you can do is wait and let them sit. Dont suffocate the jars, just dont let light in for a while.

I had a simular jar issue on one of my grows. Used the small mouth insted, what you can do is wait til the are colonized, or done spreading, and either break the jar, or scrape out the verm layer and chop up the cake with a sterilized knife, and place into a bulk tek.

Hope this helps!

Namaste

Hey clo3, Is there a reason you posted this in "Website Announcements" as opposed to "Mushroom Cultivation"?

Great thanks for the advice.  They did happen to be in a darker cupboard for a couple of days over the weekend when there was a lot of growth.  For a bulk tek, you mean cut off the colonized parts and spawn them a bulk substrate in a fruiting chamber ?  Or add them to a grain jar or something like that..

A mod or admin can move it for you.

Hey thanks for the advice people.  Jars ended up fully colonizing - I was just too impatient.  One got a small trich spot so I had to put it outdoors.
