Cave shroomies
    #18758810 - 08/26/13 08:26 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Yesterday afternoon I went on a hike which lead me to some caves in North East Pennsylvania. These caves are particularly cold, enough to see your breath in the summer time. Since it's pitch dark inside, I used my phones flashlight and explored through, noticing mushrooms growing in the cold dark soil. I'm so curious about what kind they are since I'm currently growing my own at home and am aware that some types need to be in cold, dark places to prosper. The white on the outside is like ice crystals from how cold it is inside. I gently scraped off some of the white to find that the underneath is very smooth and grey in color. Roughly 4 inches tall, give or take. Any idea what they may be?! Thanks for anyone's help!

Looks coprinoid, maybe a coprinopsis species. Very cool find!
