Alternative Birthing Methods

Three weeks ago two large fully myceliated cakes weighing approximately 1.5lbs were soaked in cool water for a period of sixteen hours. One of these cakes grew a mushroom prior to dunking. As stated, three weeks have passed, the cakes are yet to exhibit any further pinning.
I have several questions: 1) Why did a mushroom grow without dunking the cake? 2) What other birthing methods are there to induce pinning? 3) Why haven't traditional birthing methods been successful?

How do they smell? If you birthed a cake before full colonization, and pinning can happen even before it's done colonizing in some cases, may have contaminated during the dunk. Either that or your fruiting conditions are way off.

I suspected that the first cake might not have been fully colonized at the time it was dunked. I decided to cut the cake in half a week ago to check whether or not the mycelium had penetrated the core of the cake. It had. Moreover, the second cake was most definitely fully colonized. For these reasons I doubt that the problem I am experiencing is a result unconsolidated cakes.

They don't have much of a smell. They smell a little bit like tap water.

The fruiting conditions are in the mid 80s at near 100% humidity for twelve hours. The remaining twelve hours of the day are spent in a mid humidity environment 20-50%. I read in several locations on these forums that wet and dry cycles help pinning.
I have kept the cakes in a relatively dark area for the humid period of the wet-dry cycle. In the shade of overhead florescent bulbs. I'm guessing 25-50 lux. For the dry period, the cakes are exposed to shaded sunlight.

It is unlikely that the cakes became contaminated during the dunk. The water that the cakes were dunked in felt around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The cakes appear free of any fungal infections. If they did become contaminated, it is likely that the contamination occurred after the dunk and is bacterial rather than fungal.
If the cakes are indeed contaminated with bacteria, would a short bath in hydrogen peroxide eliminate them?
Let's keep the rapport going.

The 12 hours at the lower humidities may be a problem. Cakes lose moisture particular quickly. You might have noticed if it feels like they've lost a lot of their water weight, if so they're probably just dehydrated.

What type of wet-dry cycling do you suggest?

It depends on tge kind of FC you're using or more specifically how much fresh air they're getting. In any case the humidity should remain high at all times and the wet-dry condition is produced solely by waiting for the excess water to evaporate before misting again.

The best thing you can do is watch the lets grow mushrooms video series. Google it. The digital download is less than $10 and the section that you need to watch can be viewed for free on youtube. Type in "Lets grow mushrooms" on youtube and watch part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4 in that order. It will help you out tremendously. You have read some bad info. Don't feel bad. It happens. Don't give up! Watch those videos and give it another go.

BTW That video will show you how to build a proper shotgun fruiting chamber. That is what you need for cakes
