Can I substitute sawdust with coffee grounds (for Shitake)?

Hello All.
I'm having the damned-est time finding sawdust for my shitake projects. Coffee grounds, however, are quite plentiful from the local S-Bucks. I also have a bag of adler wood shavings from a pet shop - and boy was that SLOW when I tried just that and wheat bran.
Can I use Coffee grounds + some buffer(lime, gypsum) as a substitute for sawdust? I'd mix that with the shavings and probably wheat bran as well.
So what do you guys think? I've been searching various forums for answers to this question not found mention of a similar project. Basically, I'd like some advice with shitake + coffee grounds before I waste 40-70 days in a futile experiment?

Thanks guys, and thanks S-Bucks for the free grounds (which are awesome for Oysters)!

These are straight rumors, but I've heard that coffee grounds are acidic and contam more easily. While they are a good additive so substrate, im not sure about it being the main ingredient. worth a try though
someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Great thoughts ( And I love the waterbear signature).
Well, I hope the buffers(gypsum/line) could handle the acidity problem. For contamination, 3% H202 diluted 1:5 or 1:10 from a fogger/humidifier. That seems to help.
So are you saying Hay + Adler shavings?...hmm. Interesting.

I saw a post the other day where the person was using fuel pellets. They soaked the pellets and broke them up and it turned into sawdust. I know Shiitake likes hardwood but I am no expert, could be that this will work for those mushrooms. Hopefully we can get someone with more experience in here.

I can totally vouch for that. I was pasteurizing some wood fuel pellets and when I went to spawn, yeah, it was more like sawdust.
They all fell apart basically

Hello all
Well. I figured what the heck and decided today to try out this cawfee (40%) + adler (40%) wood shavings + Wheat germ (10%) for good luck. percentages were approximate since I was trying to figure out how well it would mix (like a baker fiddling with the batter by feel and sight).
Also, I tried to buffer with some gypsum pellets laying around but ran out of that. Of course, having that cheapie $5 soil ph tester is not much help trying to figure out the pH. So at this point it's not a true experiment, more like a what-the-heck jambalaya recipe, but I'll give it a shot.
NOTE: This time I'm wearing gloves for the coffee. Last time I was mixing the verm+ coffee for a while (15 min) un-gloved and got the most awful contact-buzz though my hands. No kidding.
What is known is that the ph is probably still around 5-6. Also, interestingly - the consistency is very-very similar to horse poo and the air-pockets in the mix are pretty good. nice nooks and crannies for the myc to hide in. The wood shavings are great for keeping the clumps together!
1.5 hours in the PC (turkey bags) for today and tomorrow, I'll thrown in some shitake spawn. Note: open all the windows for this one - PC'ing used-up coffee grounds for 1.5 hours is ugh.
- I need to say I'm really new at this (<6 months) so I'm practically bumping my head in the dark - can you tell? :-)
I'll keep adding to this thread as it happens.
