Growing edibles/gourmets on probation?
    #18758163 - 08/26/13 01:11 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Technically theres nothing they can do right? I really wanna get my fungal thumb put back to good use. I wanna grow some oysters and chantrelles in my basement. I wont even possess spores of active species, i just really wanna get some kind of grow going. I can wait until im off to grow actives but I really wanna get some edible gourmets going. I love oysters and my roommate can make an utterly delicious mushroom wine sauce, guy at the farmers market said its good enough to start marketing.

What do you guys think?  Im sure at first it will be a hassle when they visit but I would not ever grow actives on probation, thats ignorant. Its not illegal to practice mycology though am I right?

Well i know its not illegal im just worried about the potential bullshit involved with a p.o visit and them seeing a mushroom grow. Like detaining me until they can find out whether they are active or not.

Well, if you plan on not even having any active spores, maybe they'd just test it once (if they even find it) and leave it alone.

I mean, you're essentially gardening. Growing plants similar to weed doesn't arouse suspicion.

Alright, I think I may get this project going in the near future. Couple strains of oysters, couple chantrelles maybe even some medicinals.
And its almost maitake season by me. Mmmm fried maitake is delicious.

If they come wondering through your grow area and they say 'oh whats that'. be honest, they are edible and gourmet mushrooms. Put labels of what they are on all your stuff because most likely they heard of mushrooms. And.. if your pursuing a market\profit venture, tell them that too.
Ask if they want to be let in to see them, hopefully you'll have some growing at the time so they'll notice and maybe they'll take pictures.

Gardening is not a crime.
Give the po's a taste if they're curious.
If you don't have any fruits ready just buy some at the market, excitedly retrieve them from your fridge and say that's what you're aiming for.

I've been on probation (supervision) twice, along with jail and prison time, both for illegal psychobotanical horticultural experiments (mj involved). I was also in possession of homegrown shrooms, but not charged for that "crime".

In my opinion, though not illegal, I would avoid growing edibles.  It depends on what you are on probation for.  If it isn't drug related, maybe that would be OK.  If it is drug related, I would definitely stear clear of the probable hassle that is looming right around the corner. It just isn't worth casting suspicion around you, and just gives them more reason to just stop by, and say "hello". JMHO

I was on house arrest for a while a couple years back.

I considered setting up my greenhouse in the basement for some king oysters (which I had grown before and still grow now).

But I just had this thought in the back of my head saying, what if they're familiar with ways to cultivate psychoactive mushrooms?

If they notice I have the equipment to grow these "gourmets," they are probably going to notice me, more than if I just don't grow anything other than vegetables.

I don't know where you live but it's a little hippie villa here, I'm sure they are familiar with mushroom growing methods to some degree.

IMO, when it comes to dealing with the law, any risk is bad risk.  Don't chance it unless you are fully willing to deal with the (potentially unfair) consequences.

That's not true, especially for someone on probation who gets PO visits.

OP, if you want to actually do this, one, make sure this computer/account is inaccessible to them when they visit.  Then, if you really want to play it safe, get out in front of any possible situations with your PO by contacting her directly.  Explain that you are going to be putting time, money, and effort into producing a healthy, legal, safe product and if she wants to inspect it she is free to do so.  Label every jar.  Have pictures for easy identification.

But, if you've grown cubes in the place you currently are just be careful.  I'm pretty sure RR showed one time that he had a cube randomly growing from an edible substrate.

IMO not worth the possible hassle.

I dont think doing something legal you would have a problem if your straight up with them. Just dont act like its anything and wait for them to say something about it and just explain what it is

I had a friend back in university who grew a bunch of pot in his closet in the dorms.  Stupid, I know.  But the way he went about it was to actually plant them, and then when they were tiny little things he brought both the RA and RD up there and showed them the dozen or so "tomato" plants he had growing under a HPS lamp in his closet.

A month later a fire extinguisher got stolen, and they searched his room and he was totally fucked.  But before that, all kinds of people told the RA and RD that my buddy was growing pot, and they were all like, "Naw, it's just tomatoes!  He showed us himself!"

My point is that if you tell the authorities before you start doing something that could be taken the wrong way, they probably won't even think you have the balls to do something illegal.

Probably.

I say go for it but make it very obvious that you're not trying to hide it. I don't think a PO would be suspicious if it's very obvious that you're not trying to hide anything.

An exception to the above would be if you got in trouble for a drug related incident. If a PO saw that you enjoy cultivation, maybe he'd be suspicious of you even if you didn't have any actives growing. I don't like suspicion... not at all

However the way the process works, if they think they might be illegal mushrooms, they arrest you and test them months later.  By the time they test them, your probation will be revoked and you will be in jail.    Growing legal mushrooms on probation is risky.

This won't be a problem if you tell the probation officer upfront that you're going to be growing mushrooms.  This may provoke the PO to have you searched/tested more often, but if you're not doing anything illegal, you shouldn't be in danger of an arrest.

Yeah I think ill just play it safe and not give them any reason to be total assholes to me.
Enilil I agree with you but I also kind of entertain the idea they could pull a wrongful arrest, wait months to test it and by then I will have been transferred to a state facility.

I really wanna grow oysters though.
