Want to go camping first time, don't know where to begin
    #18758107 - 08/26/13 12:54 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I've always wanted to go camping but never had the opportunity until recently. I've looked into tents and sleeping bags, I think I know how to light a safe controlled fire. But that's about all I know about camping. Tent, sleeping bag... what else do I need? I can't think of anything but there must be more things. I've done some reading up but most of the info I find I think is geared towards hardcore survival enthusiasts... not simple campers. I guess it's one of those things you're assumed to know or assumed you now someone who knows. I just happen to be unlucky enough to not know a single person who has ever been camping before.

I'll only go for a night first time. It'll be fairly local but at least a good hour and 10 minutes walk from home, nice area where people go camping a lot anyway under trees at an elevated altitude. I wish I had someone to come with me but alas I can't find anybody who wants to.

Can anyone else offer any random pieces advice before I go? Anything I might have forgotten/missed/just not know? Any safety tips? Any other stuff I should bring besides food and water?

I'm really excited about my first time sleeping outside!

I don't have a lot of advise, but it's kinda sad that you and everybody you know has never been camping

its so simple

Do you think I'm over-thinking it? I'm just really nervous and excited about it and don't want to mess up. I'm not sad about having never done it before though.

A little bit. Maybe a tiny little propane grill? those are great for camping with bacon and steak

That sounds like a good idea, never used one of those before, thanks for suggesting it. Meat + outdoors sounds like an awesome combination.

This may help you get some general ideas:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9664724

You certainly don't have to go all out for a one night car camping trip. Just the basics, food, water, shelter, flashlight, knife, rope, some random survival items just in case, whatever you feel like bringing.

Browse around this forum a bit. There's tons of good info

Try the 1st night in the back yard. If you're walking 1hr 10min and forget something it will be a long night, at least set it all up in the back yard, practice cooking your meal, so you don't become the entertainment for the evening for the other campers.

Also bring a nice size tarp, if it rains you don't want to be stuck in the tent with ALL your gear.

Hour & 10 minute walk from home? When I go camping, I go at least an hour drive from home lol.

You are over thinking it, people did "camp" for a long time before it was called camping. Once you're confident you will be able to survive somewhat comfortably overnight, just go for it. Then you will have an idea of what you want to bring with you the next time based on what you really felt like you needed while you were out there. When I go out, during the summer here in Texas, other than my climbing gear I take water, food that doesn't need to be heated, a knife, a very basic survival/first aid kit, a hammock, and a light blanket. There's a lot more you're going to want, and I've taken a lot more with me for most of my life, but  now most of the time I'm camping, it's so I can be closer to climbing in the morning. I've found it more pleasurable to leave most of my gear at home and to be as light as possible.

I used to overthink it too.

What do you actually need to survive 1 night outdoors? Not an lot really and you dont wanna carry a lot

Tent and sleeping bag
clothes on your back, something waterproof incase it rains heavy, Spare socks (keep feet dry at least)

Food + water - Cooking is handy but requires gear to be lugged.  Sandwhiches, fruit, dried stuff etc requires nutin.  It's only 1 night, not the worst if you just chow down on snacks and crap to see you through.

Torch for when its dark and you need to piss without accidentally pissing all over your gear, or if in a forest, get your eye poked by a hanging branch.  Seen it happen an i cringed so much. Stick right into my mates eye :s

Axe/ Saw or something to chop wood and start a good fire is a major bonus.

Aside from that everything else is a perk i find.  Chairs etc aren't really necessary.

TL:DR - Tent, sleepbag, waterproof jacket, socks,no-cook food + water, torch, something to chop wood and start fire.  Don't carry more than you really need.

Plus packing up all the gear the morning after a heavy camping bender is really grim. Dehydrated, pounding head and searchin around for all the bits and bobs you scattered around camp whilst wasted...

Cooking food outdoors is nice but a major pain. First you've to carry the gear, and then you need stuff to clean it after as well.

Consider the weight of: Gas stove, frying pan, oil/butter, cooking utensils, eating utensils, plates, dish cloth, soap, drying cloth + the actual food being cooked which if it's meat will prob need ice packs or something to keep it cool.

versus just carrying the food ready to eat.

If you really want a good meal to keep the stomach full just make a hearty pasta or something that morning and carry it in a tub and have it cold.

Kilos of gear for 1 meal for 1 night isn't worth.  Longer trips it could be justified or if your driving to ur site and arent actually carrying it

Just get a tent and a blanket, maybe a pillow if you're a pillow person, and some food. Take the absolute bare necessities the first time. The less technology the better in my opinion. Then you'll learn what you need to bring the next time. Just get out and do it and learn what works for you. Camping is one of the most liberating hobbies I have
Just get back to nature for a bit to reevaluate your existence lol
