NEW things I wonder about.
    #18757342 - 08/25/13 09:51 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I know that most of the things I wonder are already explained here on the site. the problem is I bounce around so much that it seems like none of the links answer the exact question im asking sometimes. Here is a short list of what Ive been wondering recently.

1. is there a field guide for all north american plants, fungi and animals + insects out there? When I was young my mother (who passed 15 years ago) had this big thick green book that was basically a field guide to north america in all its glory, Ive been searching for years for this ande cannot find it. The closest thing Ive found for just fungi is Edible mushrooms of north america a book that can be bought said to be one of the best. I also downloaded a book called edible plants of north america. Good book!

2. Is smoking Amanita dangerous? It is a fungi. Ive read mixed reports on the subject.

3. what magic mushrooms grow in the fall in northeast ohio? Just in case I find one I wanna know and take pics of them

4. Can you dry mushrooms whole with stem intact? Ive done this to some in thinking I could frame them in a glass box. If I find a good edible I would like to just clean it and leave the stem intact.

5. Does anyone have experience with eating indian pipe? (montropa uniflora) Not meaning cooked but dried.

TY and no offense but Ive been googling my butt off for years. The links provided are a list of psychoactive mushrooms that exist in ohio. Thats fine in all but Im looking for the seasons in which they grow. using wiki I come up with this info so far.:ooo:

1. Gymnopilus aeruginosus - summer, fall and winter in warmer climates.

2. Gymnopilus luteus - from june-november

3. Panaeolus cinctulus - spring to fall

4. Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata - are most common from April to mid June but they occasionally fruit as late as November.

Edibles (non psychoactive) I have found now in the late summer.

1. Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus)

2. Giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea)

3. Meadow mushroom (Agaricus campestris)

4. King Bolete (Boletus edulis)

5. Boletus bi-color (Boletus sensibilis)

6. Indian Pipe (Monotropa Uniflora)

7. Dryad's saddle (Polyporus squasmosus)

8. The oyster mushroom

9. Morel

1. I wouldn't know sorry, don't live in USA.

2. No it is not dangerous, I've done it quite a few times. It is an interesting intoxication and quite enjoyable when mixed with cannabis I would recommend it if you want a little something extra to you regular weed high.

3.
Gymnopilus aeruginosus
Gymnopilus junonius
Gymnopilus luteofolius
Gymnopilus luteus
Panaeolus cinctulus
Pluteus salicinus
Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata

4. You can dry it which ever way you prefer. Taking the stems off shouldn't change much.

5. Sounds like something you can smoke weed out of.

TY HarryL and Hudson! The Indian Pipe is a beautiful plant that has a wonderful way about it. It doesn't have chloroform which makes other plants and trees have green stems and leaves. Its parasitic and promotes mycelium growth, Ive read numerous reports of its uses in tribes for medical reasons and a few reports of it being ate raw and because it has glycosides makes you hallucinate. I have some I dried (turns black) and I havent tried it but would like to see what others have done in preparation of the plant.

Thanx Hudson for adding to the list I will get right on posting my results here.

I heard pf others smoking mushrooms and it could cause a fungus growth in their lungs or terminal illness.

as for smoking amanita, Thats good to know I tried it and was scared of inhaling spores. I didnt smoke just the caps skin I smoke the dried cap after powdering it. I felt good and floaty but seemed it made me a bit angry too. I googled for hours trying to find a case where someone smoked mushrooms and it caused a fungus growth in their lungs or terminal illness. I searched after the fact which drove me to continue until I thought I would be ok doing it.

The spores would essentially be destroyed by the heat upon combustion. I would not worry about such a thing.
