Finally getting a gun tomorrow!
#18757575 - 08/25/13 10:44 PM (10 years, 5 months ago) |
|
|
i've been researching a bunch today to find something suitable for me. i think a glock is my choice for a pistol, getting a 9mm instead of a .45 because ammo is a little cheaper. also want to get a silencer and they seem to work better on 9mm than .45... would be nice if i could find a gun that already has a threaded barrel because i'm thinking a regular barrel might not be too easy to sell...
so as of now i'm thinking specifically of getting a glock 19 gen 3, since its cheaper than gen 4 and i don't really need anything in a gen4 that isn't in a gen3 and gen4 mags can be used in gen 3...
any opinions or suggestions are gratefully accepted!
eventually my gun should look something like this

It's a suppressor, not a silencer.
One thing you should do is try and shoot any pistol you are looking to buy. If you can't, at least hold different pistols, see what fits your hand. What you can comfortably use. Size, weight, trigger. is important Any of the brands that are used in law enforcement or military will have the option of a threaded barrel. Glock, S&W, etc...
Also, you want your pistol to look like it has a suppository on the end of it?

yea i know i can buy threaded barrels obviously but haven't seen any complete guns that come like that. i didn't really know what you meant until i looked up suppository in the dictionary, i know the rounded ends don't look all that cool but it is very small and works just as well as bigger ones...

Cool cool I like that there are regular people out there in our society who have guns for when shit goes down. Me personally, way too much responsibility. I want to deal with that being under my name and responsibility etc etc. Plus they cost a lot. Nice though, I like the silencer thing. Guns are badass.

In the winter of 1968, hippies began moving into the Illinois Valley as part of the back to the land movement, notably into Takilma. Signs stating "We do not solicit hippy patronage" soon appeared in the windows of Cave Junction businesses. Despite this, the hippies stayed and became a force in the community.[3] They founded the Takilma People's Clinic and later the Siskiyou Community Health Center, the Dome School, the Illinois Valley Fire District's Takilma station, the Siskiyou Regional Education Project and the Jefferson Baroque Orchestra.
Thus spawning this in Souther Oregon,

As far as the caliber, what are you going to be using the gun for primarily? If you are just going to be shooting in you back yard a .22 with a suppressor would be a blast.
Awesome for targets and you could shoot that all night long.

yea i'd like to have something that i would be comfortable with using for defense as well. if i really want to be cheap and just shoot a targets all day long i could use a pellet gun lol. .22 hand guns are generally not much cheaper than larger caliber guns that i have seen in my local shops.
plus ammo for .22 and 9mm are not much different in price so i don't see any reason to buy a .22.

.22 is supposedly the weapon of choice for assassins. Shoot them point blank in the head and it doesn't exit and just bounces around a lot.

Richie loved to use 22s because the bullets are small and they don't come out the other end like a 45, see, a 45 will blow a barn door out the back of your head and there's a lot of dry cleaning involved, but a 22 will just rattle around like Pac-Man until you're dead.

yeah this. less recoil with a 22 but thing is with a these 40 cal hollowpoints all you gotta do is get one shot in and they got a hole in their back the size of a cantalope

I believe you are thinking of weird mob hits in the basement. If you are going to walk up to and put a gun to someones head in hte street back splatter would be the worst of your worries. You need a well placed .22 round for pop

No I think it's less because of the splatter, and more because the bullet bouncing around is pretty much guaranteed to kill the person, whereas a misfired 45 may put a giant hole in them, but perhaps you didn't hit a vital spot
I dunno though this is all conjecture ,you're fucked either way

This isn't really a good enough reason to get one in many cases... Also, you will need signed approval from your county sheriff to have the ATF permit the suppressor.
Also, if you are even talking about making your own, you shouldn't be so worried about not having a threaded barrel. That is easy machining with the right tooling.

you dont need a reason for a suppressor and I know that where I live, there's no sheriff approval required, you do nothing more than set up an NFA trust, fill out the forms and pay the $200 transfer tax

.45 ACP has twice the energy of 9mm Parabellum for a similar sized bullet and that translates as much more penetrating power.
I read a PDF (I believe posted by Prisoner) where LEO investigated which bullet was the most lethal under varied circumstances and .45 won it with a landslide over 9mm.

I believe the .22 was right on par with the 9mm in lethality, the data was collected from actual shootings as opposed to ballistic gel lab tests

fuck a 22.in a combat situation they suck dick.get a gun fighters gun.i always buy a gun that I will be comfortable with in case of a real gun fight.yeah a 22 will kill you at point blank range in the head, but in a combat situation or a home invasion ivolving multiple people with guns a 22 is insufficient AF im not worried about someone trying to mug me.i don't have shit plus im a bigger person.im more into the scenario of multiple home invaders w/ guns, road rage incident w/ foe who has gun as well ect ect

Lone wolf distribution makes a drop in barrel for your model that is threaded. Get yourself a nice set of night sites and some training and have some fun. (I highly recommend training because damn u should see some of the tards that have come through my classes) is this your first pistol? Also look up the 25 cent trigger mod for it.

I'd like to say I think this video is fake or rigged. I've been hunting watermelon in the wild for atleast 15 years now, and have never seen more than 2 watermelons lined up in a row. I heard a story of a guy who went hunting wild watermelons and found 3 in a perfect line, but I found that hard to believe.
These watermelons were either tamed and trained, or sedated and slaughtered for fun. It's sad either way.

A 45 would be a better choice if you want a suppressor. Any round that is super sonic will make a loud crack, silencer or not. Subsonic ammo for 9mm, on top of packing less of a punch than regular 9mm, will likely cost as much or more than 45 ammo.

9mm is comparable to a .45, not a 22. With good hollow points a 9mm will expand to be wider than a .45.
22's are lethal, yea, but it might not be until the next day. There's no comparison in the stopping power.

the problem with your claims is that real life shooting fatalities paint a much different picture, you're living in a land of fantasy about the ineffectiveness of a .22 in self defense
let's face it, thousands of people surviving being shot a dozen or more times with a 9mm, it doesnt paint a pretty picture for the round's effectiveness or your claims about stopping power

I like glocks tho.its nice yer just gonna have to get proficient at firing a large caliber out of a compact pistol.i had a kel tec 9mm,after like a clip or two my hand was sore as hell from the snap, but hopefully the glock is more controllable than those POS

Keeping a pistol clean is very important to it's accuracy, it's been mentioned by marksman though who've been shooting for years they aren't that accurate.

You need to check your gun laws. You have to have a special permit to even own a silencer for any gun. I live in Montana which is 100% pro gun and I've only ever known 2 people that have a permit to own a silencer. One is a Smith and Wesson rep and the other owns his own gun shop and he teaches concealed carry classes.
So basically they dont just let anyone get a silencer, and for good reasons

Sure there are cases where people have been stopped by one 22 bullet and not been stopped by 20 9mm bullets, but generally speaking, I think it's safe to say that a 9mm has a better chance of stopping someone from being a further threat than a 22. Don't get me wrong, 22's are nasty little bullets and I wouldn't want to get shot with either, but I think most people would feel much safer with a 9mm or 45 than a 22.

An aquaintnance has a suppressor for his UZI. With subsonic ammunition it sounds like a nail gun. Its quiet enough to hear the action cycling.
That's pretty quiet imo.

ive had gun world, guns, handgunner mag subscriptions for years and still, and never has any article said a 22 was a good self defense round...maybe for a woman if someones wearing a leather jacket or layers or denim a 22 from 10 yards fired from a hand gun might not even penetrate enough to do any damage, meanwhile yer advisories dumping real centerfire caliber rounds at you not rim fire..22 is lacking in kinetic energy in a combat situation

Yeah, that's just screwing the thing on the barrel and firing. I imagine with supersonic ammunition you'd get a lot more noise and a crack though.

Guns are pretty fun to fire, but I've never really felt a compelling urge to own one. I feel like when people carry weapons like this, there is way too much temptation to not be careful and put oneself in dumb situations that would be avoided if they weren't carrying.

My point was that I think people who carry guns are more likely to put themselves in risky situations that they would otherwise avoid if they weren't carrying.
Like I said, I enjoy shooting guns, I was just stating one of the reasons that I choose not to carry one.

No, but I've seen it make people cocky enough that it was a damn good thing that didn't happen. I get cocky enough from my martial arts training. I don't know what I'd be like if I were carrying a gun and drinking.

i'm just replying you saying your martial arts training makes you cocky. most people into that know pressure points which are lethal, and if you just started a fight with someone you would be completely liable to be shot although not killed.

.22 is definitely lethal. Shot placement makes the biggest difference anyways. .22 magnum has nearly the same energy as a 9mm but with better trajectory, velocity and good peneteration. Barrel length also makes a big difference to projectile energy.
I would have gone with a .40 and bought a .357 sig barrel as well. .357 sig works with .40 magazines and guns and is a great round, better than .45 acp in my opinion. It has more energy than a .45 acp and you can carry more of them in the same size magazine, better penetration potential too, .357 sig could penetrate higher level body armor or cover than .45 acp.

thanks for your input. this was my first gun though, and i admit i'm pretty ignorant about guns as far as the differences in them. but i feel this is a good weapon for an experienced shooter who grew up around guns. i like that there is no safety non-sense, if i want my guns to not fire then i won't load them.

Yep, unless specified any 22 mag ballistics will be for a rifle barrel. It's only mariginally better than 22lr in a handgun.

I'm not disputing the .22 lethality just that there was a collossal energy difference between .45 and 9mm.
Not all .22 aree created equal though, some are solely propelled with just a primer while others are packed to the brim with powder. Obviously that makes a huge difference in effectiveness.

Keeping a pistol clean is very important to it's accuracy, it's been mentioned by marksman though who've been shooting for years they aren't that accurate.
accuracy is in the shooter, even the most accurate gun n the world isnt going to hit dick if the shooter is incompetent, marksmen will tell you that you cant shoot targets at 300-600 yards with a pistol using open sights as well but there's people out there that can. if the sights are off some can take one shot and know how to compensate, others are instinct shooters, they can fire from the hip and hit their target
everything requires practice, self defense shooting, target shooting, home defense, even masturbation takes a little bit and I practice that daily in hopes that I'll become the expert one day

SurReality said: well considering i trust pris more than just about anyone else to know what he's talking about. i went and got the .45 which was my first choice anyway... waiting for pic to upload

I'm not a bit fan of glock but they are good guns and there's a lot of shit out there that can help you tailor the gun for your self and your style of shooting, threaded barrels, compensated barrels/slides, mag wells, extended magazines, a great deal of stuff that many people find useful or just fun
the .45 ACP is a good general duty round that can be bought in a number of configurations, Hornady Critical Defense is a great round for a carry weapon while any standard ball round above 200 grains is great for target practice and still somewhat affordable. some manufacturers do recommend a specific weight range for their guns based on the rifling and the twist rate, you shouldnt have trouble feeding any .45 ammo through it though

i haven't yet , i don't have a vehicle but the closest national forest is closer than the closest free shooting range. so a bike ride might be in store. plus the only ammo i could get at shop i got my gun were hollow points, $28 for 20 rounds but i have an order of 150 rounds coming in the mail that was about $90 which i plan to use for practice. but i'm tempted to waste at most 10 rounds of the hollow points on some beer cans if i can't find anyone in town to sell me rounds for a $1 or less.
i am trained for concealed carry, i think the next thing i spend on guns will be for my permit. but before i am permitted, how should carry my gun on my bicycle? i want to just carry it in a bag, i don't really want everyone to know i have a gun. so if i keep my ammo (loaded mags) in separate parts of my bag, or in my pants pocket is that legal? i guess i can just buy a holster for my hip and open carry since i'll just be out of town for all but a 5 minute ride...

with a small gun like that,if you hold it weak wristed it could easily jam on you.cant wait to hear about the recoil on that compact 45.and goddamn that's highway robbery $28 for 20 self defence bullet?thats a rip.and besides with a giant bullet like a 230 grain 45 you really don't need HP.the big ass bullet will have plenty of knock down power.next time just get yerself some regular 230 grain roundball for way cheaper.you should be able to get a box of 50 for around 15-16 bux, jacketed roundball

if i can that would be awesome, cheapest i found was 50 for $25 before shipping. you know a website selling rounds that cheap? i'll look around town, i really want to shoot today.
also i have shot a compact .45 before and i am well aware of the recoil i'm not sure exactly what gun it was but i don't think it was much bigger

have you checked WM?i saw a brick(100 bullets) of Winchester jacketed round ball there for like 30 some odd dollars 45 can be expensive AF tho like I said just stick to a good well functioning accurate round ball.the 230 grain fatty has plenty of knock down power without getting all fancy with the projectile.thats why GIs love the 45 in combat.it killed the enemy.HP are not allowed through Geneva conventions in the US military, all bullets are jacketed non HP(other than tracers of course)

i'm really not sure how i can carry my gun on my bicycle, since i don't have a holster i was thinking i would just carry in my bag unloaded... but since i'm not sure its probably best to go buy a holster so it is visible while traveling by bike.

ok that explains it
a lot of 45 gun manufactures claim so much 45 ammo fits in the mag.alot of times this isn't the case not to mention yer gun is still "tight" which means it isn't broke in yet.it takes at least 200 rounds to properly break in a pistol.10 rounds capacity is amazing for that tiny gun considering its compact.full size 1911 usually carry only 7-8 45 rounds.load it up with 9 or 8 or even 7 rounds in that compact pistol, youll be fine..also the manufacturer may have meant 9 in the clip and one in the chamber.load up 9 bullets, chamber 1,then unload the clip and add a bullet.you got 10 rounds

a lot of 45 gun manufactures claim so much 45 ammo fits in the mag.alot of times this isn't the case not to mention yer gun is still "tight" which means it isn't broke in yet.it takes at least 200 rounds to properly break in a pistol.10 rounds capacity is amazing for that tiny gun considering its compact.full size 1911 usually carry only 7-8 45 rounds.load it up with 9 or 8 or even 7 rounds in that compact pistol, youll be fine..also the manufacturer may have meant 9 in the clip and one in the chamber.load up 9 bullets, chamber 1,then unload the clip and add a bullet.you got 10 rounds
gotcha, i thought it might be the clip. its actually really hard to get that 10th round in the clip so i thought maybe it was the clip. also what about with larger magazines? a little extreme but.. http://www.glockstore.com/mag-parts-extensions/fifty-round-magazine-drum-for-glock

from my understanding you bought a random box from a pawn shop. most pawn shops around here are shady. ive even seen some shops sell rounds in zip lock baggies. it was nothing on you, it was more on the shadiness of the shops themselves...
on a side note, i always have trouble loading new clips. its hard as shit to get that last round in.

It's a common problem, the gun isn't tight though, it's the magazine spring. Just throw this in to google "seating magazine glock 30" and you will see. I have a S&W shield that takes some force when inserting the 7 round mag in, it really needs a good palm strike.
You might want to buy a magazine loader such as this http://www.maglula.com/PistolMagLoaders/UpLULA%E2%84%A29mmto45ACPmags.aspx your fingers will thank you for it.

Thats from the top round being pressed into the slide from the stiff spring.

lol i think the pawn shop i got it at was pretty cool, it came in a box just like from any shop. actually the pawn shop was recommended to me from a large sports store because they were out and the guy was nice enough to let me know that the prices are much better there anyway.
also it did come with a loader, but i seem to find it easier to just use my fingers for the last round. honestly i'm probably not going to load 10 rounds at a time if i'm shooting, probably really would just be a waste of time spending extra time to struggle just to get one more in.
