About to start fruiting, few questions before I screw it up =D
    #18755108 - 08/25/13 01:00 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi guys, it feels like another life ago that I first inoculated these jars, but the time has finally come. I started 2 batches of 10 jars each, 10 days apart. I lost 3 to contamination, but the other 17 are hanging in there.

Anyway, today is the last day of consolidation on my first jar. I guess it's normal for them all to not be ready at the same time. I hope. I've been using good ole PF TEK, so I built the SGFC and such. I have some questions about the location/lighting though. In the guide it says to leave it in an open space. I can't really do that though, best I got is a closet. I'll still elevate it off the ground, but it's in a corner in a pretty narrow closet with clothes hanging above it. Will this still work? Does this just mean I need to fan more often?

Also, the lighting. The guide said lighting is at the bottom of importance as a pinning trigger, but does it have other effects on the mushrooms? As previously stated, they will be in a closet. I leave the closet door (sliding door) cracked, so its light enough inside to see the mushrooms, is that enough or do they need a brighter environment? When the guide says to keep the light schedule 12/12 does night count as the dark 12?

Also if anyone could point me to a good spore collection/usage guide that'd be great. I've read guides about how to collect them on paper/glass etc, but they never say how to use them after that (without making them into syringes). Do I just kinda scrape them into a jar of substrate and wa-lah?

Thanks mushroom bros, this website is so helpful it's refreshing =)

yes, closet is fine.

Yes, the dark 12 is "night time". Although if you have indirect sunlight, that will be plenty.

Spore printing 101- wait for cap to mature and flatten out a little.
Cut mushroom cap off as close to cap as possible.
Unroll aluminum foil. Optional to cover lid of a baking tray, so as to cover with the box.
Place caps on aluminum foil, gills down. Optional, put thumb tack in top of cap for easy removal.
Let sit 24-48 hours for darkest print.
Carefully remove cap from foil, trying not to smudge print.

There ya go. You have a print.

and seriously... No you don't sprinkle spores on substrate and Walla...

Did they just finish consolidating? Might want to give them a week to ham up. With the PF tech when you inoculate the jars the spores are shot to the outside of the cake so you can see the process. You might want to give them some extra time in the jars so that they can full colonize the inside of the cake as well. This is one of the reasons that many people love Grain, because once it is fully colonized, you shake and case. Less overall time.

As to your lighting question, I always gave my cycles when I slept. I would put a grow light over them at night, then fan in the morning and dark them for 8-10 hrs of work.

Thanks for the replies, but what do you do with the spore print to use it??

We do not give a one week consolidation so the middle can colonize. The consolidation period is used on very nutritious substrates such as brf to give the mycelium time to consume or digest the substrate. If it is fully colonized on the outside then it is fully colonized on the inside.

Op once your jars are 100 percent colonized on the outside give them a week to consolidate just like you said. A little longer won't hurt if you wish. As for lighting direct light from a cfl bulb works great. A little bit of light ambient light coming through a cracked closet door won't be sufficient. They will still fruit but you won't get optimum yield
