First time harvesting cactus

My friend would like to experience some cactus. I am told that this cacti may be a bridgesii semi monstrose, but at this point no one really knows exactly what it is. The plan initially was to just grow both of these cuts separately, but now it has changed to harvesting for a friend. The plan is to harvest approximately 7.5 inches of the cactus (about 2 inches to the right of the cut in the first picture), but to be sure there is enough of the cactus to reroot and continue growing. My friend doesnt want to take so much of the cactus that it will be left without a portion to continue growing.
The left cutting weighs 230 grams and the right cutting weighs 350 grams. The length of both cuttings combined is 12" with a 2 inch diameter.
I don't want to cut up the right cutting unless I am sure this is a sufficient amount for harvesting. If it is not a sufficient amount, I will just root both cuttings. My friend has never experienced cacti before and I think that should be sufficient for her.
My situation is a little confusing to read, but to simplify things: I have the 12" cactus (actually 2 cuttings combined) pictured below . My friend is taking 7.5", will the left overs be sufficient for rooting another cutting?
2 cuttings together:

I am not sure what do you mean, bat if you mean to cut one of those cuttings in half, and root them separately, yes you can!

Don't eat it. Monstrose cacti are collectable and unique. It probably won't have enough alkaloids for two people to have a worthwhile experience anyhow. Might as well grow it and enjoy it for years to come.

Sorry, my post is very unclear. The cactus was cut in half initially because I was planning on growing both halves separately. My friend wanted to try some, and I am willing to give 7.5" of the total 12" to her. My goal is to ensure that my friend has a sufficient amount, but more importantly, I want to ensure the continuation of my cactus.

I have heard that about monstrose. What is the reason for their rarity? Can't people just keep cutting them to make more?
I'm not 100% sure that it's a semi monstrose bridgesii though (I suppose only time will tell). Regardless, I'm not going to kill it off by allowing someone to eat it all .
I am essentially just asking if 7.5" of the 12 total will satisfy one person, while allowing for the other 4.5" to root. I have heard 3" is sufficient, but I really don't want to kill my cactus off, so I just wanted to make sure that it was likely that the remaining 4.5" would root.

Yes you can root that. Honestly I would root both. Cause 7.5 inches is not that much. I guess you could feel something but to me wouldn't be worth it. I would just root both and then try when you have enough to harvest at least 12 inches or more to where you don't have to worry if you'll have cactus left over for growing. I personally wouldn't eat it either. I wish I just had one of those amazing plants. It is a rare form of growth but, I wouldn't say brdgesii is a rare cactus itself.

Not to play devils advocate, but from here that looks more like environmentally/weather induced deformation rather than monstrosity. Could be wrong though as its not always easy to tell.
I do agree with the others and would suggest rooting and waiting to obtain a larger amount of another cactus, if only for the chance that that my be a monstrose after all.

I see what looks like a flower bud on the first cactus. Don't cut that one up, let her flower.

Looks some sort of potent pachanoi to me. Small dark aeroles and dark flower bud hairs. Also dark green color on skin is similar to cacti I have found potent but I have not monstrose growth on my pachanoi plants from south america.
I am not sure will 7,5inch section give strong experience enough, it's looking regular t. pachanoi cactus but there are still very potent pachanoi plants around but deep experience from 7,5inch piece sound still small dose but I would not consume all that plant. Top of it is very nice for cutting!
Let your friend try small section so you know then how active that is if you are really going to consume this. I would not consume both of these but if you feel it necessary, consume section on the left at picture just for a test and grow another piece so you know then how potent cactus you are growing.
Do not trust the weight of the sections. Top has probably more water in tissue than bottom section. It can be seen that bottom section of cactus has dehydrated and therefor lighter.. Weighting these pieces doesn't tell you dose, dehydration will drop weight but mescaline amount is the same.
Don't trust the scale if your material is not fully dried.
If you really want to get experience to you and your friend, plant both cuttings and grow them. In two years you have good amount of cactus what can be harvested.
If possible, just obtain two 12-14inch sections of san pedro to get full experience for two persons. If clone is weak in potency you need possible 20inch of san pedro per person.. with potent san pedro cactus 20inch is high dose.
I have seen that weight of the person doesn't have major effect, I share long time ago +30inch of cacti with my friend and he weights ~130Kg and I weight below 60Kg and still we had nice time together exploring the magical world.
12inch shared for two would be waste of this beautiful monstrose.

I agree with you that it is likely a deformation due to weather. I guess the only way to know for sure is to wait .Quote:

Thanks for the detailed information. I am rooting them now using the no-soil method you suggested to me previously. I have them sitting in a cardboard box(not very tall) with the top 2 inches sticking out into partial sunlight. The rest of the cactus is supported upright by crushed up newspapers.
Thanks all.

Why not give her the full 12 inches? Sorry I couldn't help myself. I'm glad to hear you are rooting both out in case it does turn out to be monstrose after all.

Words of wisdom, haha.
I'll post back in a year or so, with a new picture. Hopefully by then it will be more clear as to what this guy is .

Its a monstrose bridgesii. You can see where the spines were cut off. Also the hue of the skin where it hasn't been rubbed. Definitely not a pachanoi.
Grow it for sure. Not enough there for any worthwhile experience.

Thanks for the ID. I'm rooting both cuttings.

Monstrose variants and bridgesii are both known to be fairly consistently potent. I'd give her 7 inches and plant 5 inches. Those monstrose are slow growers, and she probably doesn't weigh much.
