What an awesome fucking place. A learning institution where thousands of kids could learn exactly what they want and do exactly what they want. You're out for your own self and there is NOTHING stopping you from doing anything in the world (hyperbole, you get it though...).
I didn't really know what I was going into, but I decided to be make the absolute best of it and I realize, after 3 days of awesomeness that I have an AMAZING 4 years (and beyond) ahead of me.
How are you all liking college?

I love college too! But being a poor I can only afford to go to the community college after waking up at 4 and working 10 hours.
Also this song is obligatory

I went to Community College for two years commuting there because my High School grades weren't high enough to get me into a University. I had a tendency to generally not care about anything I was learning throughout both years.
I went through periods of going to class really stoned and just spacing out the entire time.
I also went through a period of just sleeping in the parking lot instead of actually going to class.
I can't go back next semester because my GPA is too low.
That was my college experience.

college is cloggage.
you can learn any amount of things in the curriculum, online; yes, without the fervent listless souls colliding in alleyways, but nonetheless, if the endeavor is about attaining knowledge, college has got to the most gyp institutions ever.
here pay out the ass to deal with jock-douche bags and learn things you can learn for free online!
(sorry to sully your enthusiasm, OP, don't let me accomplish any such misdeed. i'm glad you like college, i just hate it's many foundations. i think it COULD be an awesome thing, though, for all that's worth. )

I've been pushing through the lower-division requirements for my major (neuroscience) in community college for the past three years. I've done three years of general science coursework (genchem, ochem, and genbio), all I've got left is the statistics, English, and general physics.
I have another year to go, which means now is the time to start filling out applications for "real" university. I'm a bit nervous ATM because my GPA isn't exactly sterling, and I really want to ultimately go on to get my PhD and be a major player in the cutting-edge brain research. If this doesn't work out I figure I'll go to some sort of engineering program at a vocational school-- not my first choice, but not a bad one all the same.
There's the general opinion here that you can learn anything online, and this is certainly true, but institutions of higher learning provide several things you can't get anywhere else-- namely, the discipline-from-above of rigorous coursework (seriously, I would never be able to self-educate to the same degree of completion and aptitude), the prestige necessary to have your questions and hypotheses taken seriously by the scientific community, and the opportunity to have an army of graduate students at your beck and call.
Wish me luck, guys.

I start tomorrow. Just spent all weekend stocking up on hygiene/cleaning supplies for the next 4 months and got new clothes for the family and paid off half my credit cards with our school checks. Hell, we got 7,400 just in grants alone not including the loans we pulled out. Its going to be a good semester. I am finally taking classes that involve my major.

Thanks, and me too. All I know for sure is that I've got years of thankless effort ahead of me, but I'm quite certain of my goals so that will be the easy part. The hard part will be conquering my social anxiety to the extent that I can network properly.

Im getting a Bachelors in Business management. Im thinking I will start working on additional certificates outside of my college in my jr year of school. Got to have my resume looking good to get a job in this competitive market. I cant be going to college to get out with no job or a low paying job. Otherwise I will be in the same place I was before getting in college..... in poverty

I was kinda torn between majoring in Philosophy, which i'm very interested in, or something that i'd be more likely to get a job with after school.
I chose Philosophy, and there aren't many jobs for people with that degree. I'll probably end up teaching.

I've got a ton of degrees (seriously). General education is a thing that you hate at the time, but when you look back on it, you realize that you learned more from general education than from your major. It's really funny how that works, but it happens.
Enjoy general education, that's my advice. It seems at the time like a giant waste of time, but man you will learn stuff from it that five or ten years later you will still remember and look back on and use. Your major teaches you a lot, sure, but it's a lot about one really, really specific thing. General education teaches you a fuckton about everything. I hated it at the time, but now, man... I really look back to my general education. I learned so much from general education.
Also, pick general education classes in things that you're interested in. Don't just pick something because it's open or easy. Pick classes that you have a personal connection to.

College was fun...I miss it in a way. I only got my AA but I lived on a state university campus. Too many good memories, lots of bad memories too. Tons of girls and drugs...parties and new people...those 2 years were wild
I think i'll be going back to get my bachelors sometime next year...

the trend is already happening, yo. intelligence is the new sexy; and staying inside of a institution to live out your days, with your benchmarked proclivity partner, eagerly awaiting the next assignment, until they get payed enough to retire and peacefully recline in their own home with amenities. travelling only on the behest of their lacking of any culture.

Ethics was amazing, I'm really glad I took that course. I actually wish I had an incentive to take more humanities courses.

how can it be interesting to learn, tailor made, about what the human condition is perpetuating naturally, in everyone's everyday anyway?
isn't it more interesting to just do it, first hand? i don't get it.

ethics are boundless. everyone's got a different point of view and no one is gonna sum it up in any sorta of relevant context, lest one is going to school for it... but then it's only relevant to the meager extent that one will allow it to copulate with the understanding that one has already. it's like "hey i went to school and learnt a bunch of shit" and then the next day "well, hey i need to school again, because everything has been made irrelevant again." just because you follow an ethical guideline or code, doesn't ever mean you've cemented any sort of knowledge on the subject, because you're already bound the principles of how you learnt said concepts of ethics to begin with.
it's continual learning process in which ethics are "amounted and compared to" each other in never ending discourse. i guess to go to school for study in this is awesome, but it's not like the subject of "ethics" will ever reach a reasonable conclusion of it's own accord.

College is going fucking great, Going into my second year and loving it; Only taking part time classes right now, but this full time diploma program I'll be going into in 2014 looks epic

I took a few years off after high school but now I'm about ready to hop on the collegiate bandwagon But seriously, I almost did it when I was 18 but it just felt wrong, I don't know. I'm glad I didn't either because I wasn't in the right mindset and probably would've done bad/worse than I would now. These days I find myself pretty fucking bored of the same old, and you know working in a warehouse will teach you quick that you want an education. You don't wanna be 55 breaking your back for some d-bag at the top who will throw you out when they can because you're an expendable worker in today's America. I see people like that everday at work who have done it their whole lives, working in warehouse after warehouse. Fuck that. Fuck blue collar. You gotta commit to this shit when you do it, do it right, don't waste your fuckin money. I'm glad your having a good time OP, hope it works out the same when I find myself in the same position

I had fun in Community college, but didn't really go to my classes very regularly or do my assignments. I'm just not cut out for that kind of shit. I can do martial arts training that most people could not endure, but when it comes to academic education, I'm just not into the process. I enjoy learning on my own, but school just never really worked for me.

To be honest, i'm not really sure what I want to do with it. I'm just interested in philosophy.
I've always enjoyed writing a lot, so my real goal is to get some books published as a source of income someday. I wouldn't mind being a teacher someday either. A combination of the two would be grand

at the moment - because anything can change with school - i'm earning a really cool degree. i'm doubling in english and philosophy, possibly with some type of writing minor. i'm focusing more on the language/rhetorical theory aspect for my english degree rather than literary analysis. logic interests me as well with the philosophy side so it all ties nicely together. i'm seriously considering law school but i'd like to have a marketable degree regardless.
rockyracoon, you might want to consider doubling with english and earning a writing minor if you're just wanting to do a bachelor's.

i'm majoring in both philosophy and english. my school has a double major program for them. you might want to look into seeing if your school offers something along those lines. or at least look into the writing minor.

Yeah I choose philosophy too. Starting an internship at my old high school next week. Fucking weird feeling I tell you...

Fuck college. I've been happier since I dropped out last March than I have been in years. Reporting in from Minnesota. I'm just getting situated from my move from St. Louis to Minnesota. I definitely love this state, and couldn't be any happier. What I enjoy about college is that it can give you that drastic change needed in your life. I wouldn't be able to do a move this big if I didn't have a good enough reason, luckily I've got school to thank.

Mathieu's Being in College Tek advice from a recent graduate
- DONT FUCKING HURRY.
- Don't spend too much time back at home, especially in your first year. Does your campus seem empty on weekends? ITS FUCKING NOT. ITS FULL OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO WISH THEY HAD SOMEONE TO PLAY WITH.
- Use RateMyProfessors.com EVERY semester, it will earn you half a letter grade in every class for the same amount of effort.
- Don't save too much money; live cheaply where you can, and save it for awesome shit. Go camping. Go road tripping. go tripping.
- Really think about a class schedule that works for you. What got me out of bed was having all of my classes chunked together in a dense 2/3 day per week death-block, and using the rest of the week freely.
- Playing video games alone is the biggest waste of your college experience. Chronic chronic use a close second. Stick to experiences that elate and elevate you, you have the rest of your life to be sedated. Keep it social. Spend the $$ on the aforementioned awesome shit.
- Avoid classes taught by TAs (sorry grad students!), unless they have a kickass review / you do not care about the course. They don't know how to teach, usually don't know how to speak English (which is fine for them as people, but shitty for you as a learner) and they can do nothing to get you forward in life. Not so with professors.
- After your 2nd year, you shouldn't spend any more of your summers mopping floors or serving tables if you can help it... you might not get paid well in an internship, but do it anyway. If you turn that internship into a job, or leverage it during an interview you'll top that entire Summer at $10/hr in a couple weeks.
- Find a professional-level mentor(s), whatever your major/career goal. If there isn't a program at school, spam people who do what you want to do; you can find them on Linkedin-- ask them if they would be free for coffee (on you) so you can pick their brain. They will be your biggest advocate when you graduate, and you will need that.
- Speak up in class regularly, but don't try to shove down everyone's ears how smart you are. STFU 10 min before class ends...
- DONT RUSH TO LEAVE THE DORMS. It's tempting, but that is the ONLY read ONLY time you will get to live in that kind of arrangement-- and it's AMAZING if you have the right mix of people. Ignore the downsides, you'll tell those stories for the rest of your life.
- Make friends you wanna be around for a long time. For serious, it's fucking hard out there-- you'll turn around in 3-5 years and wonder where everyone your age went. In college you think everyone in the world is your age, but they're not-- in the workforce everyone's in their 30s-50s. Hipsters will confuse you. Belligerently hot women in ridiculous abundance will be a thing of the past. It's hard to believe, like the first few pages of a dystopic novel.
Good luck.

Mathieu,
That is pretty good advice there. I really agree with the dorm thing. There is no other experience like it, except maybe for summer camp. People are inherently lazy, and if you move away from the people, it just isn't the same.

Lucky you. At most schools, usually every seat is taken.
That's how it's been for me. I have to show up pretty early to most of my classes to nab that prized first-row seat.
This semester I'm finally signing up for DSPS for my ADHD (after three years on the meds ). This will mean that front-row seats will be reserved for me. I think this will be pretty swell; my average distance from the front of the room in any given class seems inversely correlated to my scores in that class.

Seriously. I got a small 500-700 person private college and the living arrangements, while at first took getting used to, are amazing. I love having everyone so close by. It's a good time. I'm going to relish my senior year

Almost none of the people I met in college kept in touch with people from dorms. Dorms are fun for a year (I kinda got screwed there), but they're also expensive, shitty living spaces, and pretty romanticized. You become friends with people from dorms like you become friends with people from work. Good for a year and the dorm experience all that. Beyond a year seems pretty pointless to me.
Though I will say, my second year I lived in a house with 10 other guys and it was pretty awesome. So I guess I got a bit of the dorm experience without actually living in dorms. It probably depends a lot more on specific circumstances than just saying "Oh you should/should not stay in dorms for as long as possible".

Dorms are great for freshman because that's where you meet TONS of people. My second year I moved to a house close to campus with 4 other friends. This was lots a fun too

Dorms suck ass compared to having a house / apartment. I couldn't disagree more about staying the dorms.

i live in an apartment on campus. i love being able to walk to class, but not being able to own a pet, have candles and having an RA is beyond gay for a person my age. but i really don't get hassled and it's a small sacrifice that i have to make for now since i don't own a car or make enough to afford to live elsewhere.

Maybe my school was a little different, but we had a "student ghetto" that encircled the entire campus. Literally everyone lives within a 15 minute walk of campus (and each other) but it's all landlord owned properties, so you get the best of both worlds.
I lived literally 50m from campus while I went to school.

yeah, i live in an actual apartment building and there are other apartment complexes all around campus. but everything is managed through the school's housing department. there may be complexes that don't have ra's, but i doubt it because all of the ones around me do. i understand why they have the rules that they have, but it's annoying when you're old enough to not need to be supervised in that way. for example, they inspect apartments once a semester to make sure they're clean (and probably to bust kids for weed). it isn't terribly invasive but it's still some bullshit, especially since my place is sterile, highly organized and really quite nice for what it is. my ra just walks right in and turns around so it could be worse i suppose.

My school was exactly the same. You didn't happen to go to McGill, did you? The dorms at McGill sucked if only for the fact that you had to climb halfway up a mountain to get to them.

It was fun for the first 3 years or so but I got tired of Kingston after that - it's pretty small and there's only so much to do. Definitely a fun environment though being so close to all your friends and everyone throwing parties left, right, and center.

Yeah, at some point I imagine the best thing about Kingston is that it's only a two hour drive to Montreal.

Toronto and Montreal were similarly sized metropolitan areas in the late 80s. Toronto has ballooned in size since then, and Montreal has pretty much stagnated,

College...if you ever find yourself slacking or lacking motivation, take a semester break or two. I wasted some good money fucking around for a semester. I took a year off then came back ready to crush my courses. It's hard to get motivated for tough engineering classes though.

i can't do any class before 10am, and even then it's a stretch. i work until midnight mon-fri. one thing i try to do is allow myself for a nap in the afternoons. it's my saving grace. i just finished up my one class for the day and am about to finish my sandwich, lay in bed and read until i drift off until it's time to get up, cook dinner and sign into work (i work from home).
it's a grind man, especially if you don't have the luck to have parents who have thought far enough in the future to give you the resources it takes to make being a highly successful student easier (a car that's paid for and money to live on where you don't have to work a bullshit job).
keep at it and fuck the haters.

I'm done with college, for now at least. I will eventually go back and get my graduate degree, but I'm working on figuring out what subject and if I wanna do masters or Ph.D.
Have fun but DON'T FUCK UP! Party in moderation, don't make the same mistake I made and let your GPA go to shit. Also, wrap it up when you bang people. College campuses are breeding grounds for STDs.

Montreal is definitely a prettier city, but my comment was purely about the music scene, and they're about the same IMO.
Montreal also gets BITTER cold in the winter, like Ottawa. It's awful. I love that about TO, very mild winters.

Sounds like you were in the same boat as me. Shit GPA, interested in neuroscience. If you haven't attempted to find an internship in a neuroscience lab, DO IT. Especially since you have a year left. I worked in a neuroscience lab for about 2 years as a research assistant. It was unpaid, but it was the experience that I got that helped. I have my second interview coming up in a few weeks for a paid position in a neuroscience lab. Get that experience or you are uber screwed. Most of my friends that got their bio degree and didn't do an internship are now managing retail stores or working some other menial job because no one will hire you without experience.

The dorm that i'm in has 150 people in it. 100 girls and 50 dudes.

That, my friend, is a righteous ratio.

i can't do any class before 10am, and even then it's a stretch. i work until midnight mon-fri. one thing i try to do is allow myself for a nap in the afternoons. it's my saving grace. i just finished up my one class for the day and am about to finish my sandwich, lay in bed and read until i drift off until it's time to get up, cook dinner and sign into work (i work from home).
it's a grind man, especially if you don't have the luck to have parents who have thought far enough in the future to give you the resources it takes to make being a highly successful student easier (a car that's paid for and money to live on where you don't have to work a bullshit job).
keep at it and fuck the haters.
I'm gonna have to drop my early morning history class. But yeah, I have no money whatsoever, and no vehicle. I'm still loving the on campus experience though

Sadly you have to pay a lot to be around individuals that know a lot thats just the way it is.... capitalism at its finest. Having gone through the best college in the area to the middle and even community college I can say from my experience what you get is what you pay for and can even attend in the first place.
