Is my gypsum supposed to look like this?

It's kinda sandy and dirty looking. I thought gypsum was supposed to be like a chalky white rock?

I have various bags of stuff for mush and plants. I have a box of pellitized gypsum which has a light brownish look. Also I have a bag of powdered gypsum which is white\slightly yellowish color.

yeah, it seems I've got the pellets. It looks just like this.
I just wasn't sure so I thought I'd ask. I'm already using it because I got impatient and needed to start my process along. I hope I'm not using like the completely wrong stuff and have to toss it out or something.

Yep thats what I use too. I use a coffee grinder to grind it into a fine powder though.

Alright, cool. I suspected it might be a little coarse for the mycelium. I'll stop by goodwill or something and pick up a grinder.

Pelletized gypsum is gypsum with a binder.
It dissolves in water, returning the gypsum to powder form.
Don't waste your money on a grinder or ruin the blades.
Jman gave you bad advice.

Ohhh okay.
Yeah, just after I posted this (right around the time I was getting impatient) I put some into water and let loose on it with an old hand blender I had laying around. After I decanted it I ended up with little white rocks and a bunch of muddy paste. The muddy paste is the stuff I ended up using, but looking at it now I think these little white rocks are the things I want.
They don't seem too hard. I can break most of them with my finger nails.

You don't even need to worry about that.
Just toss in a handful of gypsum to your substrate or soak water, then use it.
It's all gypsum. It's all beneficial. You're only removing good stuff

Most of this definitely isn't dissolving in water though. I think because it's made for lawn care it's supposed to be like slow acting or something, resisting deterioration while gradually conditioning the soil.
I don't really need it to last very long, so a small amount spread very evenly seems like it'd be the best answer.

It is fine man.
I use the same stuff you do. Have for years. Never touched a grinder with it in my life

But you said yours dissolves in water... You also said you have the same stuff as me.
My observations conflict with these statements.

But I said this as well:

Some of it may remain solid. It varies from bag to bag, pellet to pellet.
And I'm saying that it will work fine.
Once it gets heated, it will dissolve more readily as well.
But whether there are small rocks or just straight powder, it makes no difference to your mycelium either way
