I'm probably just being picky, everywhere is probably like that to a degree. But in the UK it seems to be all I ever see. You can normally tell the type but it's hard to describe because I'm tired. I've been to a few other countries and everyone seems to have some colour about them, they smile more, say hello, and seem fitter and more robust. Even in America where they have a stereotype for the fat and lazy, even the overweight people seemed to have a glow of health about them that poeple over here just don't have. The lifestyle seemed healthier too, less focus on getting absolutely blindingly mashed every weekend. There's a social pressure to be the biggest bitch/dick as if it's cool and will earn social credit and sadly they never quite grow up and pass on this ideal to their children.
Of course not everyone over here is like that but even those that aren't seem exhausted and depressed by life in general.

How many of these things have you done? Do you plan on doing all of them? Are there some you do not want to do?
I sure as fuck am not getting married again. Ever. Marriage is possibly one of the worst things ever invented.
Fuck. That. Shit.
I'd like to own my own home, but it's all a matter of credit and income these days. I don't know if I'll ever qualify, or if I do it'll probably be for some shitty cheap ass home that I won't even want. Apartments are pretty cool anyway.

So far I have done four of the five things.
I love being married, but I am still young and I know that marriages often go sour down the road. My parents were married 35 years before they got an ugly divorce, so I do not take anything for granted, but I love my wife and I love being married. So far.
I love owning a home but I never would have taken on a mortgage. That amount of debt scares me. I lucked out and got a free house. Never saw that coming.
I got three university degrees and a college certificate, and that I am really glad I did. I enjoyed it for its own sake, and it gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment. If I had to pay for it myself and go in to debt to do it I doubt I would have done it though.
As for a job, I work full time at a low paying job that has no prestige but is super easy, relaxing and gives me tons of free time to read, write or do whatever I want, which I enjoy, and its low stress and gives me enough money to live on.
But I will never have children. Children are a massive financial drain, a massive drain on time and energy, and heavily constrain your freedom to do things like travel, etc. Every child costs like a quarter million dollars to raise, plus sucks the life out of you in terms of time and energy. I like to think that by not having four children its like a million dollars in the bank, that I can use to get a PhD, travel the world and buy a cabin someday, if things work out.
The one thing I think should be on the list that isn't is travel. I am hoping that will help add fulfillment and richness to my life. I want to focus a lot on travel for the next chapter of my life.
Also owning pets like cats or dogs (never had a dog but I want to) is in my opinion better than having kids.

I think that is more just the flow of life that dictates that. Society isn't a coherent organism capable of dictating anything. We collectively managed to make these ephemeral things called laws that reflect our collective conscience (for the most part).

Go ahead. By the way, get the fuck off the internet.
We are the only species that has a food chain within our own species. Sure, many argue that other species eat each other, ostracize each other, kill each other during mating season. It's also been shown that all this behaviour is instinctual, and they almost have no conscious feeling toward it. No other species, of course, defined, has a food chain within it's own species, an organized slave system.
Even ants, that all serve the queen, do so at birth. They are born, and quickly organize and serve the queen, without orders, except a few pheromones. Fascinating, how the highest thinking species organizes and structures ALMOST instinctively in a hierarchical order. God damn right, survival of the fittest.
I don't believe in Obama Care. Obama care dictates helping the wounded. But the hierarchical order dictates humans are clearly a species in which survival of the fittest is a rule that applies. NOT COOL DUDE, MESSING WITH NATURE

The only thing that society dictates us to do is get an education, well at least until you are old enough to drop out. Most of the other things are what your parents want for you. Wouldn't you want your kids to have a job to provide for themselves, have shelter, and start a family?

What's wrong with acquiring knowledge, companionship, shelter, money and offspring to carry out our name and legacy?
If anything, that's guiding us in right direction. Unless you have some sort of outstanding talent, you really shouldn't be thinking you're different than the rest of the population.

I've knocked down 3/5. I don't think I really desire children, and I'm pretty ambivalent about marriage. I can take it or leave it.
I can say that doing all of them has brought me great happiness though. I loved getting an education. It brought me into contact with people I really admire, many considered to be brilliant minds in their respective fields. Overall, education has exposed me to many things I otherwise wouldn't have experienced.
After that, everything sort of fell in line and followed. I really enjoy my job. I'd even go so far as to say I "love" it, but that might be somewhat of a stretch. I also have a great home that I enjoy taking care of and spending time in, it's also been a fantastic investment.
I think that society "dictates" these things to us because its one of the most beneficial "paths" you can take. Lots of people seem to reject it "just because" with little real reason to do so.

That is why in The Netherlands we sterilize retarded children and when health care costs for the elderly are getting too high we'll just euthanize them. If you are wounded and too impaired to work the chance is big you won't make it out of the hospital. We are a knowledge society and there is no place for the weak.
True socialists kill the weak, you're all mere cattle.
Besides that we are nice people.
