The life society dictates for us

Would you guys agree that society basically teaches us that we should all follow essentially the same path through life?
And would you agree that this path has the following clearly identifiable steps?
1. Get an education
2. Get a job
3. Get married
4. Buy a home
5. Have children
It seems to me this is basically the five step recipe for life as our society teaches us.
How many of these things have you done? Do you plan on doing all of them? Are there some you do not want to do?
And for those of you have done some or all of these things, how happy has it made you? Do you feel fulfilled?
What, if anything, is missing from this list?
Is this really the recipe for the life well lived? Or is it totally misguided?
If you could make an alternative list of essential life steps, what would it be?
I think the protagonist of Fight Club gives a rant about essentially this, how our parents tell us to follow these steps but in the end its not really clear why and perhaps there is no essential meaning or fulfillment to the accomplishment of these goals.
I would love to hear your thoughts, feelings and reflections on this life path. If you have done these things, do you feel fulfilled or ripped off? If you have not done these things, do you want to? If not, what are you going to do instead?
When you have done all of these, what comes next?

This really has nothing to do with society. It comes from our biology and is present through the animal kingdom. The parallel path for other organisms is something like this:
1/2. grow up and make yourself useful in some role within your group of fellow organisms or learn how to live on your own 3. find a mate 4. find shelter 5. have children
It's just how any form of life goes throughout their lifespan. There's always a growth period, then a mating period.

If its rooted in biology, why is it that so many people do not follow this path?
The emphasis on career and home ownership are certainly influenced by culture and society. Some choose to rent and not buy a home. Some people choose to travel from place to place rather than settling in one place. Some people choose to have a string of casual sexual relationships rather than get married. Some people choose not to have children, while some have many. Some people drop out of high school, some get PhDs.
I think you need to recognize that biology alone cannot account for this drastic range of different life choices, and social and cultural factors must play a role.

Individual differences are obviously what account for the drastic range of different life choices. (Which I think also gets down to biology, because your individual biology influences your preferences, drive, desires, etc. For example the casual sex thing might be linked to oxytocin and vasopressin receptors in the brain - in voles there have been studies that show that if vasopressin receptors are increased, then voles who are naturally polyamorous become monogamous.)
I was just saying biology is in fact what dictates that general path. Economics is what really leads to the emphasis on a career, because those who want their offspring to do well (which is a biological drive) need to be able to provide a good life for said offspring which requires financial stability in most human societies for much of human history.
I dunno, society plays some role obviously but I think it's largely a biological imperative.

Very interesting thread. I've noticed a lot of people I'm close to give up their dreams for financial stability. Or quit enjoying their lives because their job has sent them spiraling into depression. I know a lot of that stuff is necessary but what's the point in working to live and living to work?
Sadly, I'm jobless and about to be financially fucked. Without these things, I really can't get anywhere (by society's standards) but even without them, I can pursue other things that give me fulfillment. Ultimately, I just want to live simply, and simply live. I have no desire for a fancy ass car, 'top of the line' job, or any of these other things that are so popularized by everyone.
If I can get by without day to day stress, I'm good to go.

nobody dictates that for you. You live in Canada, you're almost as free as we are in America. You're always free to do whatever the fuck you want, as long as you don't get yourself put into prison or killed.
in any case most people find that having a satisfying work and family life actually makes for the best overall life quality in general.

This. All roads meet the same end so it's best to take the road you enjoy best
As for the OP, I plan on doing all of those but not because society tells me to. Education only because I love what I'm studying. Job because I need to be active to combat my depression. Home because I need isolation (I'm an introvert). Children because I want to bring something good into the world (meaning I'm hoping to raise them so they can make a difference). Married is the only thing in iffy on. Sometimes I debate whether im meant for relationships.
But anyways, I hope none of these actually become the main focus in my life. They are by far not the road to happiness

each person serves God in his own way. There is no service to any God but God. One may think that one is serving something else, but in fact one is serving God. One does not have a choice. God will turn your actions so that they serve his purposes whether you intended for them to or not. Intention, however, makes all the difference when it comes to the state of your personal soul.

Funny you should mention ecclesiastes. Because that very book tells us what the purpose of man is. Read carefully and understand.
Ecclesiastes 12:13
King James Version (KJV)
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
