Just a quick couple of pictures.
Things are starting up again, bit by bit. This winter has been horrible for me, warm and humid, I've lost about 30 plants to rot and mold, that were supposed to be in 'cold storage'. But oh well, always look on the positive, right? At least I'll have more space for the new additions.
All of the Astrophytums pictured, except for the myriostigma KIKKO at the end, are from those seeds you gave away Naum. I always forget to thank you, so I would like to say a big thank you now! Those seeds were great, clean and vigorous, and the seedlings look to be the same. Some of them are starting to show very interesting colours. All the scions on the Astro tree are supposed to be from those seeds as well, but I've just recently noticed an Ariocarpus between them! Not that I'm complaining.
The only thing that has been growing like mad is this Ariocarpus fissuratus monster! I've no idea what it's supposed to be, crest, prolifera, monstruosa, but it looks cool nonetheless. I didn't manage to get a good photo, but another fissuratus from the same batch, sown and grafted at the same time, is still absolutely tiny.

Thanks! :awesome:
I now regret not investing in some lights, but will give it serious consideration for the next winter. There's so many different options tough, tons of conflicting posts, I always get too lazy and just say screw it...

Hylocereus undatus for the Ario, Selenicereus grandiflorus for the Astro.

At least you're winning in some category!  Mine are clearly nowhere big enough to rank anywhere but the last few spots in this competition.

I don't think that overlapping contests would be a problem having two contests running at the each hemispheres spring. (NOV and MAR ???)

naum I have been growing a few of those mutant seeds and I got a few mutant asterias; kikko and fukuryu and 2 either varigates or koh-yo myriostigma. Everything is still quite small but I hope to cross them.

Yeah that thing is awesome!!  The tree is also!  What sort of turbini is that?  This genus confuses me.

Cheap lights are the best imo.  If its free its for me.  Ask a friend that does construction if he has any floro office lights he pulled off the job.  I usually go the re-purpose route, but this year I had an extra hundred and splurged on 4 t5HO.  Think all 4 for one shelf was over kill.  So next season I'll have 2 per shelf maybe 3.  If I had a large foot print with no height restrictions I would hook up an MH or HPS.  But I have a small foot print and limited height so I went with floro.

Between Nitrogen and Naum's seeds I really missed out on some good freaks during my AFK days.

I like the idea of every 2 years. I'm down for what ever. It could make for some very interesting things if we keep up with it and kept the group together and all worked on the lines together.  Create somethings we could collectively call our own?

I think I'm going to shop around and see if I can find any reasonably priced plants that I could use for future breeding.  I hope this summer and fall is filled with many flowers.

Thats awesome Modern Shaman.

My flower was short lived.  Closed up last night and that was the end.  I hope it sets seed. A second flower is forming, so if it did I should be rolling in turbini seeds
:sploosh:

Thanks!
That is Turbinicarpus rioverdensis, or Turbinicarpus schmiedickeanus ssp. rioverdensis, yeah, it's quite a confusing genus. To me, this is the best looking turbini species, although they are all quite beautiful. Another grafted one took, but is growing slower, hopefully these two will produce a lot of seed in the near future!
And thank you for the lighting advice! :super:

Great work Tangich. That Ariocarpus is mind blowing. I'm sure I've seen something similar being removed on a surgery show before....

Any fluoroscent light set up will be better than none. My T8 twin bulb system was under $50. You'd make that back with the growth over Winter. Free set ups are even better. Very cheap to run really.

I will update in the next 48 hours with my piddly little lophs. I've been very lazy.

Here is the pot of seedlings from your seeds, naum:

These grafts came from that pot:

These 2 are from my own crosses:

Thanks! Seems I have a knack for making Ariocarpus freaks, that one hybrid last summer looked like a mutated octopus, now it looks very much like a plutonium-caused tumor.
My main concern about lights actually is safety. I hate leaving anything plugged in when I leave the house. But I have to admit it would have come very handy, for cacti and for peppers, trying to grow young hot peppers on a windowsill in a cold apartment while battling hordes of fungus gnats is a fool's endeavor.
I'll give it serious consideration for the next winter, try to design a cabinet and fixtures that would be relatively safe, the cost is not really what bothers me, I can spare that much and don't have that many plants.

Looking great, Mostly! :super:
Would you call those two crosses true albinos, in cactus terms? Or is it schizochromism? I know the definitions of both, but still can't determine the difference in practice...

Good question. Let me know if you work out an answer
Both pots had lots of white seedlings that soon died left on their own roots. A lot of the yellow ones too.

I suppose the terms albinism and schizochromism aren't mutually exclusive, a, but as both imply the same in general terms?
Do albino's lack the ability to display the other pigments colours, like a schizochromoid can? So they remain pale always, whereas the schizos can be an array of colours.

That's pretty much the way I understand it, albinos have no pigment at all, and are coloured pale yellowish, with white or clear spines. And schizocromoids have no chlorophyll, can be coloured stronger yellow or red, with normal spines. Various 'moon cacti' cultivars, yellow and red Gymnocalycium mihanovicii and such are good examples of SC IMO.
Your first one looks to have clear spines, so that one is possibly a true albino!

Was expecting that white growth to turn into a mushroom.

Here's my entrants. Had the bulb go out for Two weeks, was a little lazy replacing it and when I did, the light was too bright and had to re adjust the setup. Apparently one should change their tubes every 6 months.

Smallest is 17mm, largest is 25mm:

I'm going a bit overboard with fertilizing hoping to make something happen and it looks like the pereskiopsis is either gonna pup or flower  The largest head of the three is 3 cm across.

Looking great everyone!
ModShaman that graft has a lot of ribs to it!
Lsoares I noticed with a couple of mine that didn't take off are just starting to get going now.  Maybe yours are about to push new growth after sorting out their vascular differences?

I noticed a couple looking shriveled so I changed out the soil on all my grafts.  Checked the roots on one after a couple days and they had plenty of new growth. So I'm expecting things to start up again.  Think between drying out, salt build up, and small pots things started to slow down.
