Fantastic!
There still could be a contender to challenge you
Quote:
- Quickest to Flower time will be decided determined using the flower post time minus the sow date picture post time. This means you need to take a picture and post a picture of when you sow and when you see your flower.
- The deadline to challenge a Quickest to Flower entry is 62 days from the first flower posted per species category. This is to allow for a challenge from someone who sowed later in the 2 month sowing window.

aww yeah How is you're star burst astrophytum going?
I realize I didn't take a picture of soil on the sow date. I did say what day I sown them on though.

I said that I would plant them the next day. Looking at my notes it says I sown this on the 6th of October.
If there is an issue I'll happily drop out. No stress.

I don't foresee any issues. The rules are to keep us honest, and it will be obvious if anyone is attempting to be sneaky. We will hash it all out at the end
The star burst is coming along well, thanks! I grafted the offset to a squat myrtle stock but it sulked. I'll get an update done soon, one is due.

So, because of the dates for the competition, people that are in the US pretty much have to use an indoor setup in order to compete right? I really wanted to do it this year but the window closed before I could and it seems to start right dead in the middle of winter..
I'm going to set up a sick little indoor cacti setup in my garage soon though, then it will be ON!

Whooo! Our first flower.
Congratulations! I think you have taken the Turbinicarpus quickest to flower category. Did you ever get a species ID? I wanted to and still want with the flower to say T. lophoroides or perhaps some hybrid with that parentage.
Remember Quickest to Flower for Lophophora and Astrophytum are both still up for grabs.

No, I think it can be done competitively without an indoor setup though it depends on you latitude more than anything else. Remember that Mostly_Harmless (more northerly than most in the US) won last year albeit with an indoor setup but not a super fancy or expensive one.
The original intention was to switch the dates this cycle because the S. Hemisphere advatange we had last time. We got kind of a later start than intended this time, but at least we didn't start in the dead of winter like last time. As a result it was more even for the S. and N. Hemisphere this year. If we were to switch it, we'd need to wait out a cycle. Maybe we will switch to biannual biennial contests going forward.

I like that idea and it would liven things up twice a year instead of just once.

Thanks everyone. Yeah as far as I can tell I'd say turbinicarpus lophophoroides. I was expecting some long central spined Polaskii but maybe the few that germinated didn't survive.
No secrets no timers no real schedule. Sometimes I fall asleep and the light stays on for 2 days, or sometimes It's off for 8 to 4 hours No rhyme or reason. Just depends on how busy or lazy I'm feeling. Beats me

I misspoke. I meant biennial not biannual! That is to say holding a contest once every two years. Why? Because we are already at 5 mo. for this contest. Pretty hard to squeeze two contests into a year, and I think the extra time/anticipation would lead to a more interesting contest.
But we are all ears.

Oops. Well either way, if we make changes so that each hemisphere is capable of participating during their prime grow season, I think it would be better all around.

Any suggestions on how to do that? Seems kind of impossible to me. Best thing we can do is shoot for a equinox start date so that one side doesn't have a full advantage. Still someone gets the short end of the stick as one hemisphere will be heading into winter no matter what. And what about those pesky equator people with their constant photoperiod! Still Mostly_Harmless and Corporal Kielbasa got first flower in the hemisphere in winter so I am not sure how valid an arguement that is. Almost seems more fair to decide the start date at random especially since you are free to do whatever you want.
I'd hope with a biennial contest, we'd have people preparing long before breeding their own seeds specifically for the contest and maybe trading them too. That would be super neat.
On that note, I'd love to know who is growing the mixed Astrophytum mutant hybrid seed I collected and passed around. Anyone growing it for this contest?

Can't argue with that.

I'd be growing it if I had any seed! Got any pics of what the mother looks like?

It was just a bunch of seed someone let me collect from a show/prized specimen table because the ants were stealing them anway. They were open pollinated and I was in a rush so I stuffed the seed/fruit/ant pulp into the coin pocket on my jeans due to lack of a better container at the time.
The table I collected from was almost entirely made up of various monstrose Astrophytums including ~30+% varigates, several unicostata and bicostata cv. ozunkas, and others that escape my memory. I have not sown them personally, but a couple of people have hinted the progeny have been interesting. I haven't seen any photo updates unfortunately. I might have a picture of the table somewhere in some old files. If I come across it, I'll post it.
I donated some of these to the contest prize pool last year.

Unicostata? I'd love to see that, had no idea those even existed. I thought bico was the lowest rib count they went. Crazy stuff. Yeah don't go out of your way to find it but if you happen to come across it, I'd love to take a peek.

I find grafting under lights, with the more stable temperature and lighting, gives better results than in the greenhouse (in my climate).

These two are from those seeds:

And I have a pot full of seedlings too. The brown mutant was a lucky pick, it was one of the first to germinate and just taken at random.

Here's my update of my single graft. I think I'm in the lead for the most bug damaged graft so far I'm hoping it grows out of this damage eventually, though it's been stunted for a while. My other (non contest) grafts that got damaged ended up pupping in a very pleasing way, so I'm hoping that'll be the case with this poor baby as well.
