It's up to you and I'm honestly not sure what is best.  I currently don't have any, but I feel there is plenty of airspace to allow my soil to dry out in between waterings.  Plus we already know that you could probably fill the whole tub with water for 10 days and they would still survive...

I approve of this message. I'm sure most of us have heard the phrase work smarter and not harder.  The same applies in the cacti growing world.  Grow smarter not ..harder?  Well, it almost works. You get the idea though.

Anyone know where I can get White Light seedling trays and/or 4 inch pots like pictured?

I've got a metric ton of 4 inch pots if you need extras..trays included.  Not sure about the white light trays though.

A lot of times the black ones are EASILY and FREELY accessible from local nurseries or recycling centers.  At least ALL of mine were...

Yep. Every time I'd visit my local nursery I'd ask the owner if he minded me heading into the back area where he keeps all his extra pots and every time I'd walk out with a tray or two.  I felt kind of bad always asking for freebies despite me making a purchase every time I showed up, so I ended up buying a whole slew of new ones myself.  They are quite a bit sturdier than the ones I was getting for free too, so that's a huge bonus. Perhaps not as much of a bonus as I thought.  These might be harder to cut up and allow for extra space as you pictured in one of your threads.

Wow! How far do you keep the pots from the lamps? It looks like 16" or so?

The edge of the reflector is 300mm ( 12 inchs ) from the top of the pot. The tubes are about 50mm up inside of the reflector. I cut my pere at 150mm from the top of the pots when grafting so I would normally grow them to 250mm - 300mm and then use them which gives me a nice tip cutting to propagate.
If you grow them nice and green under a soft light like cool white fluros they are not woody at all when you cut them that low.
My preferred shelf for propagating pere is at the same height but the fixture has a diffuser fitted under the cool white tubes which they seem to love and you don't get burnt tips and red leaves when they hit the top because they are still around 50mm away from the tubes and the diffuser stops them touching the tubes.

This is a photo of that shelf with the diffuser.
The photo was taken around 12 months ago not long after a started using the 50mm pots.

I also do something a little different with the care of my pere and grafts but you guys will have to wait as apparently cant take in more than one thing at a time.

Cheers

I was admiring your Turb before I read your comment on it. I understand your concerns, but some species grow just like that, the tubercles turn all wrinkly (T. alonsoi is a prime example).

They're looking great, man. I'm following that wooly Ariocarpus with great anticipation, it looks like it's going to be a wonderful plant.

Thanks LS I was a bit unsure about the turb as it seems to have stalled as well as going wrinkly. I might leave it be for another couple of weeks and see what it does.

I am also very interested to see what the wooly Ario does. I had one a couple of years ago that started out more wooly than the others.

A couple failed in the first pix and the rest have ugly cuts.  Next round of trichocerus grafts should look better I hope.

:dealwithit: :rainbowcloud:

I'll try to sort out the pictures better later on.

Thanks:blush:
Variety seed packs for the quick collection   I figured while I was going through I'd take a pick its been a while.

Not sure what I have yet for arios a couple are just starting to get the second sets. Definitely want more arios and turbini!!
The hotdogs on a stick in the back are the tops from the first tricho grafting stocks.  Stick n poke style.

Its all a trial to me.  Never did more then one or two at a time  Will pay better attention to the height and age of the stock next time.  My oldest pereskiopsis gave the best initial growth but slowed down.  While my younger stocks with less root mass and fresher stock were slow to start but seem to be picking up as they fill the pots.  Only 3 or 4 months till I can really start thinking of bringing them outside.  Debating on moving them into larger pots but want to hold out till spring if I can.
