Tomorrow is when I plan on doing my first round of grafts and taking pics of everything as well. So we're in the same boat. First I got sick and didn't want to deal with any of it and then the scale infestation happened so I've had some set backs to deal with.

Seeds were sown 9-26, grafted 4 lophs (el oso) 10-16.
Loph: fricii williamsii williamsii (different collection location)
Astro: asterias mixed mutants (open pollinated)
Ario: mix
Turbin: pseudomacrochele

What do you guys think of my technique to keep the scion shaded, without interrupting everything else in my closet?

The smallest lophophora can hardly be recognized as the biggest graft. Even when grafted it still flowers at a very small size.

Just did another round of grafting, bringing my totals to 9 grafts.
the first 4 astros seem to have taken, and now LW huizache a total of 5. I set up my next round of pereskiopsis cuttings today and so hopefully in a week or so they will root and i will do the rest of my loph seedlings.
Pictures soon i guess

A quick update. I have two that more than likely will be fails so far from the first lot of grafts. They were Loph on Trich stock and Ario on pere. I will do another lot in the next week hopefully and that will be all I will do for the comp unless a freak shows it self. I forgot to label them. Below there is 2 x Gymnocalycium, 1x Trichocereus, 2 x Ariocarpus ( one very wrinkly ), 1 x Turbinicarpus, 2 x Lophophora williamsii, 2 x Astrophytum capricorne

Cheers Got

adjusting light levels for seedling grafts is tricky. the ideal color, of course, being green.

red ones often survive, but they lag a bit before they take off. TUBE arrays, are notorious for blowing seedling chloropasts on grafts.
i suspect lights, will be part of the contest fer sure. its a dynamic interplay, of light , heat , water, sub, and peres stock, that makes for champ grafts.

Different cacti seedlings react differently to light which makes growing an assorted lot of grafts interesting. I certainly don't have a problem with the colour of my Loph grafts but some of the others are a bit to red for my liking. They have already been moved back to a softer light for a while.

seedlings are light touchy.
the light level, thats good for peres, is a little much for the seed grafts sometimes. im sure well see more of this phenom with other contestants.
any good race, and youll see some red lining at the start.
me and maid were reviewing this contest thread. it should be good over next few months. we see there are some dark horse contestants out there to watch.

not that this is the right place for this discussion.
Anne, what makes you believe that blown chloroplasts results in the production of carotenoids in cacti?

read it somewhere. im not suggesting its about carotenoids at all. im saying light induced bio damage on the cell level.
essentially its light damage by any terms. i dont see this as a orange glow of vitamins, and a natural phase of seedlings basking in peres nutes.
light damage, not confused with a nute flush color phase on small seedlings.
oddly most of em survive anyway, but it does slow em down some first few weeks.
CFL and tube lights, are bad about that.

however carotenoids are the red pigments produced by plants... and are if nothing else partially responsible for our ability to percieve red lights... however i will agree its supposed to be produced by plants with awkward light spectrums

not to wander to far..........
weve grown seedlings on grafts out , under proper lighting " all green" and weve grown them, under excess light, and blown chloroplasts.....
trust me, the all greens......go faster/ healthier.
there is no inherent nute flush color phase that i know of for any cacti. they either burning up or not.
i could rip out 100 pics on this. but, its not the thread. red / orange, can be sesn in fast growing healthy cacti under strong light......... those seedlings arent the same thing.

again strange because the reflection of light in pigment of green means that the plant should not be absorbing that wavelength of light, due to the reflection of said light. AKA chlorophyll A
SO i am just interested in the exact wavelengths of light you are putting on your cacti

Ok before we get to far off track we know that redness in a seedling is normally to much light and also different cacti seedlings can handle different levels of light when they are very small. Surprisingly Trich's seem more light sensitive than Lophs and a number of other cacti that don't handle full sun that well when mature. We are always learning every time we put down some new seeds try a new stock or try a different mix that is why these comps are fun.
The other thing that is worth noting the colour of the scions in the first lot of photos. The lighter ones are the ones that are red now especially the Trich which was selected to graft because it was lacking chlorophyll also all have had some growth over 13 day since I posted the last lot of pics.
I have posted some of the pics again from my last post next to the same graft from the last update.
Trichocereus

Gymnocalycium

Turbinicarpus

At the end of the day I grow cacti and graft because I enjoy doing it. I also enjoy helping others out the same way that more experienced growers helped me when I first started out.
Cheers Got
