Habitat: Pacific Northwest. Found on a mulch pile in coastal redwood forest.
Gills: Rusty brown. Gills were attached, somewhat difficult to remove for spore print.
Stem: 5-10 cm long, as thick as 2.5 cm, "hourglass" shape tapers off to less than 1 cm near the cap. Dark brown to lightly rust colored. Texture of stem is rough. Stem is wide near the base and thin near cap. Stem is hollow and wider part is filled with black fibers.
Cap: Diameter 4-5.5 cm, light to dark brown, soft, conical, convex.
Spore print color: Rusty brown.
Bruising: Dark brown to black.
Other information: Musty, slightly sweet (maple syrup) smell.

Those won't be able to be identified.
They don't look like gyms

Very interesting mushrooms. Not Gymnopilus, but they do somewhat resemble them in the stems. Cap and gills are off though. They're so dark... That's got to be a critical ID'ing feature. I can't seem to come up with anything though.

Habitat pictures soon, I've never encountered these before and they're everywhere!
Thanks for the interest.

They were growing on wood correct? Take note of what type if possible. Get a good spore print as well. That will help ID it

Its a mix of redwood and fir mulch. I'll report back with a better spore print this evening.

Hmmmmmmm. Looks like a Gym in some senses. All except the dark brown appearance.

Did someone say Leucoagaricus americanus?
I am blind or you are mixing up threads.

I get it now.

Is the print rusty or medium brown? They look a lot like Cortinarius to me but the habitat makes me doubt that...
