Cantherellus cibarius var OR Cantherellus appalachiensis var
    #18752890 - 08/24/13 07:57 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I've been gathering mixed species of golden chanterelles from around the area and came up with some of them that had odd webbing/veins around the edge of the pileus.  Is this still just C. cibarious or some other hybrid of C. appalachiensis?  There's no brown spot on the top though. I have found other oddities in this same area...Found some cinnabars and some pinks as well!

Habitat: under mixed oaks, forest
spore print: pale yellow/orange
smell:  apricots

Sorry, I didn't have more pics of this particular find. I didn't notice how different the underside looked until I was cleaning them at home.  The top was the same color as C. cibarius or C. lateralis (peachy orange). Flesh: white, unchanging.  False gills ran down the stipe.  It was about 8-10 cm in width.  Anything else needed?
I have already done my online homework, which is why I am posing the question to this community.  Hopefully the lack of reply is due to uncertainty instead of snootery.  Your thoughts would be most welcome.

Total uncertainty. There is actually work being done on the DNA to sequence and separate or regroup these species. I think I actually remember reading somewhere that C. cibarius doesn't actually occur in the United States.

I wanted some input before I go through the trouble of sequencing this and other recent finds.  I have several possible C. persinicus samples, C. cinnabarinus, and what I think are B. auripes or appendiculatus.

I had read the same thing somewhere (probably M. Kuo) about broadly calling most Chanterelles with a curled margin and more prominant false gills C. cibarius.  All I know is they all go good with chicken and seafood. I even got experimental and made some Chanterelle & fig jam...It's pretty frakin good.

Seriously though, I have close contact with a local lab (Fungal Biotech Lab) where I can do this if the characteristics are not definitely known to be one or the other species.  I had just never seen that capillary pattern towards the margin of the pileus.
