Bit confused about bulk trays...
    #18753634 - 08/25/13 12:11 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

As always I'll be actively searching for answers to my questions, not just waitin on you guys to answer. Live feedback is the best though.

Plan on doin a bulk tray in my SGFC after these cakes finish up. I'm somewhat confused on how to go about doing a few things.
Quote:

First, there's the question of how much substrate for my tray. It's a 6qt tupperware container. 12.88" length, 9.13" width, 5.14" height. I'm using Coir Verm, how do I translate this to 3" of substrate? I'll look around for a substrate calculator.

Answer Found: http://substratecalculator.info/#

Quote:

Second is how I'm going to PC my spawn. If I do 1/2 pints, they'll fit just fine in my PC, if I do quart jars, I have to do 1 at a time, on it's side. What risks does this present and can it be done safely? I'll be using SFD's for the GE port and silicone injection ports.

Answer Found: It's OK to PC on it's side. Need to now investigate if water should be touching jars at all or not.

Third is the issue of colonizing in the tub. I don't need top holes for FAE since the lid will be removed for fruiting in the SGFC, how big do I need to make the substrate level holes for GE? Will an SFD over the holes work as an alternative to stuffing them with polyfil?

Fourth, casing layer, or not?

I am really confused about what you are asking in your third ques. It just makes absolutely no sense to me.

Don't use a casing layer. Just mix the spawn with the sub in the tray and cover it with something like plastic wrap. Pop a couple little holes in it and set it somewhere to colonize. You can set it in the sgfc or on a shelf somewhere. Once fully colonized take the wrap off and let it sit in the sgfc and fruit

Ok I'll try to clarify the third question.

During construction of the tub, I have to account for gas exchange for the period after spawning where it colonizes the sub. I'm asking how large those GE holes should be for a container the size of mine, and I'm also asking if I can put synthetic filter discs over the holes instead of stuffing them with polyfil.

Aren't you going to fruit the tray in a sgfc?

Hm. Open holes are OK for that period of recolonizing? I know fully colonized spawn and sub is pretty contam resistant, but then why do we do polyfil GE holes in a monotub?

We polyfill holes in a mono to control the fae not to filter the air

If you didn't polyfill the holes the sub would dry out. In a sgfc you have perlite to maintain humidity plus you use much smaller holes. A sgfc is just a completely different concept than a monotub

Think I'll reverse my big truck into this convo and say you won't need holes in the tub - there is enough GE between tub and lid. This is assuming you are doing what you are saying and will be moving into a SGFC. I am wondering why though? Why not just make it a monotub - I think you would get better results mate

He is not making a tub he is making a tray silly and I have had some pretty damn good results fruiting trays in sgfc

Third is the issue of colonizing in the tub.

I suppose I imported the idea of how a monotub colonizes after being spawned to with what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm just trying to spawn WBS to a bulk sub in a tupperware container/tray and then fruit it in a SGFC. After spawning I didn't know if I needed gas exchange holes with filters over them to help filter out baddies from entering into the sub while the spawn is colonizing it.

I'm doing a tray for now because I don't have the spores to make enough spawn for a mono, don't wanna do cakes, and I don't have the sterile tech necessary for grain 2 grain so I can't turn 1 jar of spawn into 8.

That's why I said what I said - He seems to be colonizing in a "tub" and then transferring to a "tray" in an SGFC. I think he maybe has a tray IN a tub for colonization?

Either way his "tub" would not need holes as GE would be taken care of between tub body and lid.

Pay attention before calling me a silly billy again :uhoh::slomo:

From what I know just colonize the tray in the tub with no holes if that fits in with yr plans then remove it and put into fruiting at 100% colonized

Oh I'm sorry, no the tub/tray is the same thing. I'll say tray. It's meant to be spawned to, colonize the sub, then opened up once done and put into fruiting conditions, in this case a SGFC.

Oh! I'm not sure then. I just woke up and my brain is too fried...hopefully someone else will help.

What was the question again? :uhoh::lol:

The question is this. I've learned from my studies that colonizing sub needs GE. The sub is being colonized by the spawn. How does one account for the GE of the colonizing sub?

I was thinking in terms of monotubs. I'm basically doing the exact same thing, I'm just not going to fruit it the same way because the tray/container isn't tall enough for that, so I'm just going to open it up after it's done colonizing and let it fruit in the SGFC. I may be VASTLY over complicating this, I just didn't find a definitive bulk tray tek to use.
