'This Side of Paradise'

This is Star Trek episode #24 produced back in 1968. Spores on an alien agrarian planet turn the crew members into blissed out peaceful beings. Even Spock lets his emotionless facade down and falls in love with a gorgeous blonde. The entire crew gets infected and beams down to the paradisiacal planet to live a simple, stress-free, lo-tech lifestyle.

Of course, Kirk as The Establishment, has to fuck up the dream and figures a way to break everyone free from the spores' influence. As Spock comes down he admits it was the only time he has ever been happy, but duty prevails as Kirk notes that man was not meant for paradise.

A well done vignette, this episode was obviously a commentary aimed at the hippies who were dropping out and using drugs to attempt to find a utopia.

A semi-ironic footnote, the spores also gave everyone perfect health, yet Frank Overton, the actor who played the agrarian colony's leader, died shortly after the episode from a heart attack at the relatively young age of 49.

Damn you, Kirk! :shakefist:

And that's why you never refrigerate your peanut butter.
Tears the bread up.

I really should watch some old ST, sounds pretty cool actually.

I had some peanut butter firecrackers the other day for the first time. Pretty good.

While the original Star Trek was sci-fi it was much more about semi-disguised social commentary of events and mores at the time.

Way to save the day captain buzzkill

I love that line "man is not meant for paradise", that should be the DEAs motto

In a parallel universe in episode #25 they sing Kumbaya around a campfire, but the show was quickly canceled.  Frank Overton achieves immortality though.

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.
