Questions about bulk

Hello everyone! Let me just start by saying thank you so much. This website turned my entire life around. I was doing nothing with no hope for the future and then I stumbled across this. 3 years, 3 houses, and about 60 cases of half pints later and I've decided that when things go wrong, maybe the best course of action would be to ask those of you more knowledgeable than I.
lately I've decided to go with bulk substrate because fuck jars. With that being said, I have yet to get that to work. I have recently found it was because I was being led astray by a FOAF, who told me "yeah dude, bucket tek for sure!" Now I'd like to give proper pasteurization ala Frank a try but I need a few things cleared up.
1. Why does all bricked coir smell like straight mold? The only reason I'm still willing to give it a go is because it's about half the cost of loose coir e.g. B'cuzz and it's a lot more discrete. Can anyone shed light on this?
2. Is gypsum absolutely necessary? My old roommate was able to flush considerable amounts using just coir and verm, however, every time he picked fruits the cake would come off in huge chunks. I know that gypsum is for water retention/dispersion, but does it really make that big of a difference? And does oyster shell in the mix solve that issue (big chunks)?
3. Holes or no holes? I've seen it done both ways and couldn't determine if it made a big enough difference to matter?
4. Do tubs need to be resoaked or do you just let them go after they've flushed?
Any and all help is significantly appreciated

1. Always thought it kinda smelled like dirt/earthy 2. Gypsum is not necessary but at 40# for 3$ at Home Depot why not, it will last years. I've seen a slight difference in my grain jars, they colonized a little but faster for me. I haven't used oyster shell before. 3. Never tried no holes, But seen good results with it. I've read on here that used to be the old style, but I still go with the holes as that is what all the big dogs use. 4. Definitely need a re soak if you want a good flush again. I'm sure it can go without being soaked don't get me wrong, but results will not be as good.

1. Not sure what brand your getting but go with eco earth.. never had a problem with it myself... 2. Gypsum is for the ph balance... not much to do with water content... 3. Like previous poster i have always went with monotubs with holes... 4. I usually don't resoak my tubs simply due to the hassle of it and i still end up getting a solid 2nd flush and the 3rd flush falls off pretty hard...
