8 Days After Inoculation - Colonization Questions

First - I want to make sure that it's ok for me to ask inoculation/colonization questions here? I've only made a few posts and don't want to piss anyone off, the knowledge I've got from here so far is amazing
Second - I inoculated 18 1/2 pint jars last Friday evening (8/16) and am seeing growth in 17 of the jars. I was initially worried that I didn't sterilize/clean everything well enough, but since I'm a first timer I figured this is a learning experience above all, so I set them in the incubation chamber (fancy talk for my clear Sterlite tub) and put them in the back of the closet wrapped in blankets. My digital thermometer in the chamber has sat between 77-79F consistently.
Though my initial fears were regarding sterilization/cleanliness, I now realize that I didn't insert the needle as deep into the jars during inoculation as recommended. In fact, I'm seeing a lot of growth near the top of almost every jar. Is this going to affect the growth? Should I allow them to continue or is the risk of them contaminating only going to rise the longer I let them sit? I have photos of several jars, but I wasn't sure if this was the appropriate place for me to post those, so any help/guidance is much appreciated!

This is the place to ask those kind of questions, but that information is easily obtained by a little reading. You can go ahead and unwrap them and take them out of the tub while they colonize, all the mumbo jumbo about temps is a little much and not to be worried about unless it's extremely cold or hot. And as for not going deep enough, I think you will be fine.

Thank you Billb - I do have cultivation handbook that I have read, but I couldn't seem to find much info on if the inoculation depth would have a huge factor on if the jars would colonize or not. I also took the foil off half of the jars and left the foil on the other half since a lot of information seems to be 50/50 on if it should be on or off. The jars with the foil off seem to be colonizing faster than the ones where I left the foil off, but that could just be coincidence
I've removed the foil from all of them now, and they are back in the dark. I'm going to try posting some pics of a few of the jars. Would you mind giving me your assessment?

Looking good as far as I can see. (The sharpie had me a bit worried at first as well. )
As far as keeping them in the dark, it is unnecessary as the jars will colonize just as well if not better with ambient lighting.
Your next run however, you might try with the short 1/2 pint jars if you do cakes again... I believe they are recommended for quicker colonization times and to negate the chance at stalls (maybe someone with a bit more knowledge on cakes can clarify that if wrong)

My understanding is the foil should come off. In BRF the verm barrier is the key to keeping nasties out. Also should slightly speed up colonization due to adding GE

This is definitely correct and yes remove the foil right away

I wouldn't say I am particularly cleverless or stupidfull but my full of stupid and less cleverly ration certainly alters once I've been awake for more than half hour - especially after a naughty night last night

Hi Guys - I wanted to post an update and ask you guys your thoughts along with a couple questions... as of tonight, my jars seem to be growing like wildfire - some of them I was completely amazed at how much they had taken off since the peek I took back on the 24th, and I've attached some pics. In almost all of them, you can see where the small Sharpie circle is I drew on the 24th when I first observed them, and now in almost all of them the mycelium extends almost to the bottom of the jar and the entire circumference in all of them, so this is definitely good news

My question(s) - should I just keep on "keeping on" like I have been? Do I need to start exposing them to more light? (they're pretty much in the dark 22-23 hours of the day, the 1-2 hours being when I have my closet light on in the evenings when I get home.
I've been keeping them between 75F-80F, I've got a heating pad inside the container (not touching any of the jars) that I turn on low when I see the temp drop into the low 75's (I've got a digital thermometer on the opposite side of the container) and keep it on until it creeps up to near 80 again and then I turn it off. This usually only happens every couple of days since I've got the container wrapped in blankets on 3 sides in the back of my closet which stays warm to begin with.
Any input is much appreciated!
