Military/law enforcement life
    #18750276 - 08/24/13 06:12 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So is anybody here in either the military or law enforcement? I suppose people might not want to admit if they are but I was just wondering what life is like in either. Do you enjoy it, what are the best aspects, worse aspects etc

I know plenty of cops and soldiers. Most of them are not the kind of people I want to work or hang out with. But my father-in-law is a career police oficcer, and one of the most considerate and unselfish men I know.My son is in the marines, and he loves it.However, his job is not in combat, and boot camp is HELL.They are the minority in their professions, for sure.
It's not for everyone, but if you go in with the right attitude, you can maintain your morals.
Fuck you if you are thinking about becoming a narcotics officer, you are already corrupted, you know?

I can say this, based upon extensive conversations, observations & interactions that I've had with my brother, and close friends that I've known since childhood...

The modern US soldier is a very specific type of person; it's a mold that they fit you into in order to ensure that you're effective, efficient, and reliable at the tasks you undertake-- but there is a lot of what makes you a person that won't fit into that mold. Either you have to remove those from your identity (you can't fake it for 4 years, I assure you) or you have to endure a tremendous amount of friction from your superiors and peers. Friction, under these circumstances, is a serious bitch.

Can you go into more depth? What you would have to give up? I realize the drugs and shit but that's not a problem

@Rockhound
Well if one wished to become a narcotics officer that would be directed at the criminal entities behind it and dealers not just users so I think thats not a condemnable(is that even a word ha ha?) job?

Personally I would become a Garda(Irish police are called the Gardai Siochana) if they were recruiting but thanks to our shitty state finances they aren't :frown:

I know my best friend from high school joined up with the army. From his stories it sounds like a miserable fucked up existance.  His game  face is that he loves being a soldier and he likes being ripped as fuck and being overall alpha dog. But drunk behind closed doors this kid cried and cried to me about how many of his friends had been killed. I think its fucked up that they put you through a giant bonding phase like boot camp and other training camps just to kill off all your best friends one by one. He hates his life and is going to get out the first second he can. Really tares me up inside because this kid used to be such a fun DGAF type of kid now he can barely relax enough to sleep.

TL;DR

FUCK THE MILITARY, IF YOU ARE THINKING OF JOINING YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. Live YOUR life not Uncle Sams.

That strikes me as an ignorant statement. So you're okay for using drugs, but the guy who sold them to you, or the guy he got them from  is a criminal and a scumbag worthy of jail?

Sounds like you're a little mixed up, son.

That was halfway a joke, dude. You can't see me smiling in text. You have to already have a soldier mentality to want to join, but maybe for the wrong reasons,I have been arrested by more than one cop who put on a badge and gun because they got picked on in school. And those arrests were for possesion, not dealing.
Once again,Rockhound starts a shitstorm.

What's his MOS? Sounds like infantry or something. Don't join the military if you barely passed high school is what he is trying to get through with this message. Stick to flipping buggers or retail

Point taken, its the criminality that comes with it not so much the dealing itself that I have an issue with.

MOS? Fuck that military brainwashing Newspeak.  His "job" is IT related but he also dose airborne stuff and has jumped out of lots of planes and shit. So to give you an answer I have no idea. Everytime I talk to him or any other military person they start throwing out MOS, POS, FFS, BSS crap and I don't really understand most of it.

Moral of the story stay out of the military at all costs

Haha I get what you are saying.

I'm going to say it takes the right person to have a successful military career and many do, many get fucked up as well. You just have to fully understand what you are signing up to do, serve your country. Not travel, get paid, do cool shit, etc.. You are there to take and carry out orders, nothing more nothing less.

I scored 98 on the asvab...

Even with a 98 seemed like all they had available were really crappy/uninteresting jobs

Sounds great and like an awesome time. Go geosciences! The bottom 2 levels of my biology building was share with the geology majors.

This, and I know a lot of them.

One went Army as an engineer and had his convoy get hit by an IED. He had to clean his friends out of the Amtrack that was in front of his. Dude now always tries to fight people, throws stuff at his g/f and treats her like shit, has no control over his anger and talks about wanting to join back up just so he can kill more people.

One went USMC and got recalled after his first 4, the second 4 fucked him up really bad. Ruined his life in more than a couple ways, dude now has more demons than Dante's Inferno and they come out every time he drinks, which is any and every chance he gets. His ability to function socially is about a 1/10.

Another friend went USMC and now has a bunch of health issues, his joints and back are fucked, I know he saw a few buddies get killed right next to him but I've never seen him go to any dark places about it. I've never seen him without a drink in his hand since he got out though, and that's not hyperbole.

None of the military guys I know have come out and gotten high level jobs because of it, and only 1 of them has actually used the free education he's entitled to. All of them have drinking problems, most have physical health problems and I'm not sure but I'd guess that all of them have mental problems stemming from their experience.

I am glad that I passed on the military.
