I normally don't buy too much stock in mainstream news sites, but I am pretty impressed that CNN posted such an article on their main page.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/23/tech/web/martin-manley-suicide-website/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
A sports writer who took his own life at age 60- and poetically depicts the entire event thru blogs/websites etc...
This part of the article really hit home for me:
"He said he just decided 60 was old enough. His most productive years were behind him, he feared the infirmity of old age and simply wanted to go out at a time and in a manner of his own choosing.
"I didn't want to die," he wrote. "If I could have waved a magic wand and lived for 200 years, I would have. Unfortunately, that's not an option.
"Therefore, since death is inevitable, the better question is... do I want to live as long as humanly possible OR do I want to control the time and manner and circumstances of my death? That was my choice (and yours). I chose what was most appealing to me.""
I am only 24 years old right now, but I think of these things a lot lately. Is suicide such a bad thing? Can it actually be beautiful? I think this story is proof that i can be. the word 'suicide' has such a stigma surrounding it, same with the word 'drugs'... among many others.
There is no magic wand, we are all subject to death one way or the other. Is it really so selfish to determine when/how it comes?
