Also the seat is worth some money lol. I had one of those exactly like that I parted out to lowrider bike builders the schwinns that are worth money are the 60s pea/lemon/cherry picker. etc. style bikes if you get your hands on one of those they are worth restoring or parting.
To remove the rust without damaging the paint and chrome use CLR and some 000 grade steel wool then after you remove the rust you can put some clear coat or something similar over it to protect the paint.

Also I don't really see anything there that isn't worth saving. You definitely want to keep the original forks together with the frame I wouldbt go changing a bunch of stuff besides chain bearings tires and small stuff like that. A lot of the parts like tires schwinn head badge and stuff like that you can find NOS shwinn replacements for.

Thanks man You seem Really knowledgeable about this sort of thing . Its really the first stick I'm shaking at it but its fun . I picked it up for 70 Bucks . Hes got a really nice Schwinn from the 60's with a 50's baby seat on it , in mint condition. I didn't have the cash on hand but he said he'd hold it for me and drop it off at my place when I could pay him (Friday), for only another 70 bucks. Does that sound like I'm getting ripped off or snaggin a deal ? My lady friend says its a steal but I'm not sure . My research has been rather fruitless.

3 speeds are a lot of fun. One tweak you can do is to switch out the cog in the back to change the gear ratio. If you don't do a lot of really steep climbs then you could put on a smaller cog to get more speed.

Sounds like a pretty damn good deal as long as its complete and mostly original the frames alone usually go for around 60 shipped on ebay assuming you are talking about the a 20in bike I really don't know much about the bigger bikes like the 24 and 26 inch bikes. Is it one of the ones with the springer forks or just plain forks like the one you posted?

Might want to look up how much it has actually sold for in the past...

Completed Listings Didn't reveal much . A few other 1965 Travelers without the "S" Schwinn seat , or headlight with generator , different color frame ect. The item listed on ebay is an exact depiction of my bike in slightly worse shape .

I would restore and keep it but never ride it, but we have a stable of bikes laying around so it wouldn't be lonely. I know nothing about what vintage bikes are sold for... But if you're looking to actually ride it I would replace the tires'n'tubes first, chain second, and brake pads last. Beyond that you can scrub off rust with various chemicals to various levels of success, but if it all spins fine and pulls right it should be a nice little bike.

True I have to see if/what it sells as when its listing goes down . I have no real way to appraise it either . I just wanted a good bike that would get me A to B with comfort and reliability .

I ended up snagging this because I liked the way it looked . Personally while the potential profit is nice , I like the class/look it. On the other side of that coin , if It gets stolen (which I think because of what it is , would be more likely to happen ) I'd be crushed . I know there are more expensive bikes out there . But Would this just be to tempting sitting on a rack outside a bar ?

Just get some locks. Sure they can be defeated, just make it harder than the other ones.

Are bike thefts that rampant and are people really going after the classic style bikes? You living in the ghetto? Personally I have always been a mountain bike person so I see those as the bikes to steal, but where I have live, if they are locked up they are fairly safe.

I guess I am that guy that likes off road trucks only and you are talking about a 60's muscle cars.

I don't live in the ghetto but I work in downtown city of city ville . And live in a city much like the big city but less racially diverse.

Where I work people on the street have nothing nice to say to one another .

Where I live you can have a good conversation with a complete stranger 65% of the time .

Sounds like wishful thinking based on someone's asking price. Maybe somebody would pay that but it seems like a stretch. $200-300 might be more likely. It's a nice enough bike but it doesn't seem like it's anything too rare or sought after.

$70-100 is about what I would want to pay if I was in the market for one.

Personally I like 3-speeds. IMO it's a much more sensible "retro" setup than riding a fixed gear on the road. I like that style of handlebars too, it's a little like riding a road bike with drop handlebars but you're not hunched over.

You don't have to ride "in the drops" on drop bars.  Most people do not ride in the drops most of the time.  There are three common bar positions on drop bars:
- in the drops
- on top of the levers (most common)
- straight ahead like straight bars, inside of the levers

I realize that and I used to ride a lot on a road bike with drop handlebars, but personally I prefer the style of the ones in the OP. My commuter bike is set up similarly but the frame is from an old French road bike.

I don't have a pic handy, but picture something similar to your bike with a beat up red Gitane frame (probably also from the 70's or so) and no fenders or chain guard. The gearing is something like 44/15 and the brakes are vintage Mafac Racer center pull brakes.

Are you handy OP?

If so, I'd take a shot and trying to clean it up and restore it.  Use it as a sweet "retro" commuter or something.  As others have mentioned, the ebay auction is worthless until it actually sells.

I have actually seen them sell and fetch a high dollar like that but more often you find them at garage sales for 20 bucks. You would have to find one hell of a dedicated collector to fetch those prices. Don't hold your breath. and Lol at the bike snobs that pay. 5000 for a bike and think that its more than just a bike... so much as to call this bike a POS.
Anyone that knows their old school schwinns would know that the quality of them were 10x better than modern bikes.
