This, and I know a lot of them.
One went Army as an engineer and had his convoy get hit by an IED. He had to clean his friends out of the Amtrack that was in front of his. Dude now always tries to fight people, throws stuff at his g/f and treats her like shit, has no control over his anger and talks about wanting to join back up just so he can kill more people.
One went USMC and got recalled after his first 4, the second 4 fucked him up really bad. Ruined his life in more than a couple ways, dude now has more demons than Dante's Inferno and they come out every time he drinks, which is any and every chance he gets. His ability to function socially is about a 1/10.
Another friend went USMC and now has a bunch of health issues, his joints and back are fucked, I know he saw a few buddies get killed right next to him but I've never seen him go to any dark places about it. I've never seen him without a drink in his hand since he got out though, and that's not hyperbole.
None of the military guys I know have come out and gotten high level jobs because of it, and only 1 of them has actually used the free education he's entitled to. All of them have drinking problems, most have physical health problems and I'm not sure but I'd guess that all of them have mental problems stemming from their experience.
I am glad that I passed on the military.
Shit..I wonder did war always have this effect on people. I assume it did and it just wasn't documentedy full until the last century or so

Probably but the wars that where raged in the past were way more violent and a lot more causalities. We are in the most peaceful time this world has ever seen!

PTSD has gone by many names: shell shock, battle fatigue, war neurosis, etc. All stemming from different wars.

Even with a 98 seemed like all they had available were really crappy/uninteresting jobs
That's how it always was for me too, it was always like "well you're not dumb enough to run into hailstorms of bullets and you're not smart enough to map satellite watchamajiggers, we'll put you in front of a whole shitload of code." It's like dude, I'm not gonna give up my life and what I've got going to spend my life behind a computer screen.

I always thought it would be cool to be a homicide detective. Mainly because those motherfuckers can wear whatever they want (I hate dress codes and uniforms). But no seriously though it would be cool but the fact that you have to be a regular policeman before hand, total turnoff. Just give me the job and a nine and lets go solve some crazy ass murders, bruh.

Yeah,if it worked that way,I'd strap on their gun and go to work hunting down pedophiles. But years as a crooked beat cop to get there,no way.
-------------------- Rocks speak to me, and tell me this: The Hell Creek formation is a gigantic slab of rocks that covers several western states. It contains an account of the dinosaurs' demise. In the late Cretaceous period, the first Cannabis species appear, and soon after, all the non-bird dinosaurs disappeared. Obviously, marihuana killed the dinosaurs. That giant meteor that smacked the yucatan peninsula right afterwards, coincidence.

If you're having military problems I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but killing innocent civilians ain't one.
