Modified bucket tek for real pasteurization instead of sterilization?
    #18749806 - 08/24/13 12:37 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I want to pasteurize my coir instead of sterilizing it so I can be assured I'm doing things properly on all fronts. But doing it properly the way that RR or Frank would recommend is a bit time consuming and tedious. I was wondering if something like this would able to hold proper temps for an hour:
Break up coir really well and mix in verm before hydrating so you don't have to open the bucket to mix it afterwards.
Put coir/verm mix in an oven bag and set aside.
Take a 5 gallon bucket and place it inside of another 5 gallon bucket to aid in holding temperature for an hour.
Line the inside of the bucket with a thick blanket, also to help hold the temperature.
Heat up 4-5 quarts of water to 170-175 degrees or so because it will lose a few degrees when you transfer it to the bucket.
Place oven bag inside the bucket which is lined with a blanket.
Take hot water off the stove and dump it in. Tie the bag closed but make sure to leave enough room for coir to expand. Wrap the bag well with the blanket. Put the lid on the bucket.
Wait an hour and open the bucket to let it cool off.
Repeat for as many bricks as you need to pasteurize.

This would probably work even better if the blanket/towel was soaked in really hot water. Does this seem like a feasible idea? You could also fill a tub or storage bin with hot water and place the bucket in there as an extra barrier to help keep the temperature between 140-160.
Yes I know this probably seems tedious also but if this was to work then you could do 10 bricks in as long as it takes to heat up water 10 times+ an hour for the last brick to pasteurize (3 hours total roughly). And yes you would need a lot of buckets and blankets etc to do this on a larger scale but its a small price to pay for convenience and saving time

Oh my lordy--does THAT sound difficult! Have you read Frank's Proper Pasteurization tek?

It's sounds sort of like yours but super easier..

1. Mix coir, verm, water
2. Place in Turkey bag (double bag em) -- > okay this is my part
3. Place in pot and fill water half way.
4. Stick cooking thermometer in the middle of the bag (the one with the cord and preferably with timer $15) & close bag (I use wire) & cover with lid.
5. Turn on stove to med heat (wait till it rises like 10 degrees ish)
6. Monitor temp and when it stays between 140-160 for 1 hr--you're good to go!

are you making bulk substrate? because you're not supposed to sterilize that all,its just as bad as unsterilized bulk substrate.

that being said which teks are you referring to? because i think franks tek with pasteurizing jars is a pretty good one:thumbup:

i either do the pillowcase tek or franks jar tek but if you used the search engine you would have found a tek similar to yours. only you use an insulated container like a cooler or 2 styrofoam coolers put together then you just do everything you said, but also weight the bag down with a weight so it doesnt float.

i'll have a few links for you in a second.

Why not just do the regular bucket tek but use 180 degree water instead? Just forget about the bags. Hacker is actually experimenting with this right now

I'm just afraid it won't hold the temp long enough. And also that it might still get partially sterilized starting with 180 degree water. But I guess those statements kindof contradict themselves considering if its gonna hold 180 long enough to partially sterilize then it would most likely hold 140-160 long enough to pasteurize
