i just got my arse into gear and organised my images of the last 4ish months with my darling pearl. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/xj994oezes4auv7/N5e1RGurAR in the end with the white frame i have sweet-peas(snow-peas) boosting everything else with nitrogen in an already nitrogen rich manure...so all of the brassicas around the sides of it(purple cauliflower, purple broccoli, purple cabbage and romanesco cauliflower) are going completely spazo and growing heaps of leaves, stem and fuckall else. this is how we learn. still cool. heaps of sweetpeas, rocket, dill, silverbeet and mint in there to munch on as well. after about 2 months i put in some myco-grow(mycorrhiza mix for vegies) and, as i've been weeding in the smaller end, i swear i can see fungi on the roots. i'm really excited about that end, it has green beans, purple carrots, tomato, coriander/cilantro, chilli, capsicum(pepper whatever), weed, mullein, shasta daisy and some other flowers.... i've been reading heaps about outdoor cultivation/symbiotic relationships between plants and fungi...i'm gunna put edible mushrooms into the garden.
so...i recommend alot to new gardeners. firstly companion planting is the best way to get excellent results. multiple reasons ie: automated pest control, better taste, better harvests, automated pollination and works prefect for organic grows. secondly figure out where the sun arcs east to west and plan your space from there... i used old wood i found and i bought about 5m2 of paunch manure for about $160 delivered. i bought all of my seeds off've ebay for about $40. i really recommend you get the heirloom varieties of whatever you want to grow because they're just better all-round in my opinion. plus they're generally purple:) go for organic or fresh farm waste type-manure/potting mix; whatever is local, cheap and good. you also need to figure out sizing... my gardenbed is about 6mx1.7mx600cmdeep if you have a big space....use it. don't get scared of excess as EVERYONE will take free produce and more often than not they'll find a way to repay you. weeds: granted i didn't plant into the ground but a good way i find is just to pull the weeds out of a certain area by the roots and then plant shiz on top in some manure. then pick the weeds out as they come up. you can't maintain very strict bio-security in an outdoor situation with our technology... here's an anecdote for pest control fresh from the garden: i planted fuck-tonnes of sunflowers because i read that they're a good plant for attracting predator insects. i didn't look into what, i just thought "fuck yes sunflowers rule" and put them in. i attribute the wasps in the garden and the lack of vicious caterpillars to the sunflowers. there's marigolds in there as well, they help with the unwanted bugs. i dunno what else except get growing you bastards! quick reference for companions: http://www.choosepermaculture.com/companionplanting.php this has some design basics: http://www.provenwinners.com/learn/basic-design-principles-and-styles-garden-beds this is handy graph regarding what plants accummulate what nutrients. http://dynamicacummulators.herokuapp.com/
