Anyone use radar detectors?

I'm heading down south on Monday and I've been caught in speed traps down there before....its a bitch let me tell you.
Are these things useful or are they constantly picking up other radar signals giving off bullshit false alarms?
Are they worth the money? I'd be willing to shell out some cash for a decent one for later use if it actually works.
I know I could just travel the speed limit....but I mean come on...who actually goes 30 in a 30 zone?

What brand is it and how much did it cost? How long ago did you get it? I had one like three years ago but the damn thing didn't work and I still got pulled over a few times.

My friend has one. It gives off false alarms here and there, but it says something different when it's a false positive versus an actualy police alert. Saved his ass a few times! I'd recommend it.

If you want one that's really accurate and will not be false alarming left and right be prepared to shell out the $$$
I have been asking friends and doing a lot of research and from what I can tell this one seems to be one of the better/best consumer ones to get right now http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F0RPGG/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
but at $500... shit aint cheap. But it's supposedly SUPER fucking accurate and almost never false alarms. Also has tons of features like marking with GPS coords of 'hot spots' and speed cameras/red light cams, and has memory of past speed traps.. and pre-warns you before hitting the GPS area of known spots It also intelligently remembers false alarms, but will re-activate that area if it detects a "new" signal type in that area of the cop type. super intelligent. It's packed with features and capability.. one of the best in the market on the consumer level as far as I can tell
Anyway if I'm getting a radar detector, I'm getting a top of the line one, not gonna settle for some POS because those cheap ones are usually unreliable and pain in the ass, false alarming every time you pass a fucking garage door being opened or something, and then not going off when the cop clocks you going 90 in a 55
These would be my secondary picks: http://www.amazon.com/valentine-one-V1-Valentine-Detector/dp/B000U89KGW http://www.amazon.com/Escort-0100006-2-RedLine-Radar-Detector/dp/B002LZUY8A http://www.amazon.com/Bel-Pro-PRO500-Radar-Detector/dp/B00ATVQEIW http://www.amazon.com/Beltronics-RX65-Red-Professional-Series-Detector/dp/B0009204RI

Wow,that ones actually almost scary
I actually was looking at that one(or something similar) a while back.
I'm very willing to shell out a pretty penny for something that actually works.

spend the $ and get the nice one....my boy had one that would tell you which type of radar band it was detecting, how far away it was, and in which direction.
yes they are set off quite a bit by security systems and automatic doors, shit like that (at least his was) but it is 99% of the time the band of radar that the police use.
for example, his would pick up K band, KA band, and X band...... X band ended up being security systems n shit, K band was a definite cop, either a town or a county....then KA band was a definite state trooper or county sherriff
as soon as i have the money for one im probably gonna do it....be careful tho, they are illegal in some states
edit: i believe either the brand or model name was cobra

Considering the reason for their existence, I'd say one that functions really well pays for itself after a few good uses. I'm also willing to shell out for something that works well. Also my experience with some of the cheap ones leaves a bad taste so my next one is going to be a good one, it's a worthwhile investment for leadfoots like myself.

I had one, it got stolen. It saved my ass so many times but it's a tool that you have to know how to use properly for it to work. You have to understand that police have Instant-On functions that the detector will detect, but only when they actively zap you or another car in the vicinity. If there's relatively heavy traffic, police will usually just leave their radar on and wait for someone to drive through it, other times they'll wait for you and zap you when you are within range from a sneaky spot. You also gotta know which bands police use, and where they use them. In my experience, the K band is almost always an automatic door unless you're in a small town or one of those cities-within-cities that have their own police/fire stations. Major cities usually use Ka band. X is always an automatic door and I've never seen lasers used outside of out in the country by highway patrol. But that's in my city/state and probably varies but you catch on quickly when you have a radar detector what's used where.
Anyway, long story short, you gotta know the limitations of the detectors, how police operate radar, and not assume that because you have one you're invincible.
Also note that if you have a detector and you're pulled over for speeding, you can pretty much guarantee a ticket and a snide comment from the cop. Police generally view a detector as your warning and thus will always give you a ticket instead of maybe cutting you a break. Also more likely to pull you over for 5 or less over the limit if they see it while monitoring traffic. Thus, it's good to be able to dim your detector at night time especially.
And if you're riding dirty, obviously you shouldn't be speeding but it's ALWAYS nice to have a heads up when 5-0 is in the area regardless.
That said, the two best detectors on the market are the Valentine 1 and Passport 8500. The 9500 sucks, don't bother with it. I had one and took it back for the 8500 and the general consensus among owners has been similar to my experience. The arrows on the V1 are kinda gimmicky in my opinion and the Passport is much easier to find without ordering online.
Want to read in-depth? Find a sports car forum and do a search. The fancier the sports car, the more likely you are to find good advice from many owners. Viper, Corvette, BMW, 350/370Z, Porsche, Ferrari/Lamborghini (same forum) all good options for this approach. Even the Mustang forums, lots of owners there with lead feet. The got $$$ for any detector pretty much and V1 vs. Passport 8500 are common thread topics on those forums. Just sayin'.

When I travel interstate, I dig out my CB radio . They're pretty cheap these days. Detectors are illegal in commercial vehicles by DOT regulations, so they use the CB. Truckers know where the traps are, they're good at spotting unmarked cars that are rolling, and they know where to find good eats (and lot lizards ). If cops are using laser, you're probably already caught by the time you get the signal, if you even get one. Make sure you unplug your detector in Virginia and Washington D.C. They're illegal there and they have detector detectors.
The CB might cut in to you blasting music a bit, but it sure beats a $100+ ticket, points on the license and a 3 year surcharge on your insurance. Y'all jus godda git used ta...
I just stay at or slower than the fastest vehicle on the highway, unless a get a rabbit (a speeder doing 15+ over the limit), then I'll fall in behind him, but not too close, and no more than 5 or 6 over in towns... . . .

This. They do have their own slang... " Break 1 9 (channel 19)... How 'bout you south bound. Hows it looking behind you?" never failed me (if you're going north). And talk with a bit of a twang. And report one if you see one... "Ya got a Bear in the middle at the 43 over 6." That's a cop in the median at Mile marker 43.6 for you four wheelers. Go watch

and study this... List of CB slang
My buddy used to drive a 'Twin Stack Mack with a Shack in the Back' (Mack truck with a sleeper cab. ... . . .

My own personal view is that a motor vehicle is a death machine and it's therefore logical to obey traffic laws.
I guess on the interstate it's not such a big deal since everybody is going in the same direction and there are large cleared out areas for visibility on the sides of the road.
Speeding through residential areas and maybe even highwaysseems a bit unsafe for everyone in the vicinity.
