Sheeks it'll work out. As keyohnah said, there will be some rough days, but she can get through it.
I have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and fibromyalgia and my sister has lupus. We both have our shitty days and weeks, but once you figure out what your triggers are, you can dramatically reduce your number of flare ups. For example, my sister learned that if she ate alfalfa sprouts, she'd have a nasty flare up. The best thing you and your mom can do is READ. Read everything you can about lupus. I suggest doing reading at the Lupus Foundation.
One good thing is that there are preventative drugs that can be taken. For example, both my sister and I take Plaquenil(hydroxychloroquine) to help the disease from progressing further. While it isn't without side effects, it sure as hell beats the alternative of me becoming all disfigured from RA. If things get really out of control they may suggest methotrexate, which is a strong immunosuppressant (it's actually used as a chemo drug in high doses). They almost put me on that but I said OH HELLS NO. I made a few lifestyle changes and things got better.
It's likely that your mom had lupus all along and didn't have RA. Here's a basic explanation of what's happening with the disease: with RA, the body's immune cells don't recognize connective tissue in joints as self tissue, so they attack it and start to break it down. With lupus, the immune cells don't recognize ANY connective tissue and may go after connective tissue in organs such as the heart or kidneys. Cases like that are rare though and those types of flare ups can usually be knocked out by a run of corticosteroids if lifestyle changes don't work.
Just remember Sheeks, read read read! Knowledge is power. Knowing is half the battle. And all that good stuff.
Good luck mang. Lemme know if you have any questions because I know a lot about both diseases.
