If you believe in animal rights...
    #1874741 - 09/02/03 03:56 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

If you believe in animal rights, should they be extended to single celled animals such as protozoa? If not, why not? If so, what rights should be recognized?

technically, single-celled organisms are neither animals nor plants.

Do you know how many defenceless single-celled organisms you might have killed on your keyboard writing that post? Murderer.

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

i think the amount of animal rights we observe should be determined by the amount of consciousness (or whatever you want to call it) they appear seem to exhibit.

to say that "animals have no rights" is to say (aside from 'people have no rights' -people are animals-) that things like torturing kittens and whatnot is ok.

here is a decent resource for the subject of animal rights.

I am about 90% vegan - anyone else? By living a life nearly-free of animal suffering, I am seeking inner harmony and harmony with all sentient creatures. I seek peace, and I have found through my experiences, that contributing to the suffering of other sentient creatures is a major roadblock for such an objective. I am not perfect, but I am sincerely trying to be a better human being. Perhaps there are others here on the same path as me?

I have seen animals in dire screaming pain, and from that, I know that it is not good.

peace friends.

No it's not saying it's OK to mistreat animals. We have a responsibility to try and see that doesn't happen. That is not the same as saying animals have rights.

to be mistreated.

Nope. Animals have no rights.

Animals are for eating and for our use, not mistreating.

Much respect.

I think it's a good idea for vegans and vegetarians to use % points when describing their level of commitment. Because you're not all the sudden not vegan just because you have leather on your shoes.

"for eating and for our use" doesn't quite seem
to be all the bases.

what about their natural roles?

some are virtual linchpins in nature's axle.
