Good point, although it wouldn't nearly as publicly recognized as some UFC sponsors. Maybe even exclude the word "shroomery" all together; just the logo... just something fellow shroomerite martial artists and enthusiasts could appreciate.

I'm not as into it as I used to be, and I'm woefully out of practice at this point. I'd like to get back into it, but I need more discipline, unless I can come up with the money to properly train at a school.

The only arts I ever formally trained in were Kempo Karate and SENTO.

SENTO is a modern technical, defensive martial art. I actually had the privilege of training with the guy who basically created the style. It's a kind of mixed martial art, involving elements of Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do concepts, etc.  I may be biased, but it's one of the most practical, effective styles I've ever seen.

Wouldn't fight that dude if you paid me. It was painful enough allowing him to use me for demonstrations (which he seemed to enjoy doing-- dude either loved me, or hated me. lol).  He matched me against one of his lower level black belts to spar one day. I literally don't know what happened between the point where he said "go" and the point where I was twisted up like a painful pretzel on the ground, tapping for mercy.

This is an awesome question. And I think it's one that a lot of martial arts schools fail to address properly,, and  therefore one of the reasons I liked SENTO. Now, I've also been in a number of "real life" fights, so I feel somewhat qualified to  answer this.

Adrenaline. It is helpful, to a degree. Too much will fuck your shit all up.  And that's part of the problem. If you've never had some big dude jump out of nowhere and hold a knife to your throat-- let me tell you, it gets shit flowing. And unless you're very trained, you're more likely to lose control of the decision making process, and therefore your movements. You want to train yourself to respond automatically. So that when you're in a situation like that, you have many hundreds of hours and thousands of repetitions to solidify your muscle memory, and make this stuff more instinctive.

Getting into an actual fight helps, as well. Full contact sparring can help. And in SENTO we even did psychological exercises where we'd partner up and take turns one coming at the other screaming swears and insults and intimidation, getting in your face, shoving, etc... but even those things are weak prep for the real thing. I've encountered nothing other than sheer surprise and pure fear which can teach you what real surprise and fear feel like. That part is unfortunate. So short of picking a minor fight, or getting a friend to surprise you, jump out and fake mug  you at some random point when you're walking the streets, the most you can do is train yourself to the point where muscle memory is solidified, and your responses to a threat are more instinctive than thought-through.

Actually that fake-mugging thing isn't bad. Just make sure you're not walking around with a weapon.

I have for the longest time wanted to do self-defense based war games. Pick a part of town you and a group of friends have to stay in. Wear padded gloves, pick a scenario, and go from there. Maybe a 2 vs 1, etc. Makes you see what it's like from the predators mind, how to predict an attack, etc. Also factor in the fact that you have to be aware of law enforcement, society, etc. Would be fun training if you ask me!

My siblings and I used to beat eachother with sticks in the yard, kind of the same idea I think. We also had a sweet spot at the airport for playing airsoft, it was an abandoned warehouse with hundreds of rooms on 2 floors.

There is not really a best style. I agree, that style is not that important, but the practitioner's ability, spirit, and intent. Yet, I would suggest finding a fighting system that is well rounded and versatile. IMO a good M.A. Toolbox: (striking, kicking, ground fighting, joint locking, weapons, hard/soft, long/short range, etc..). Application of skills is where it's at. If you can't apply the skills, it's just kung fu dancing, not fighting.

"I don't fear the 1000 kicks you know, but the one kick you practiced 1000 times" --Shaolin Monk

If some one has learned 6 styles, they are still a student and masted none. IMO, it take at least 10 years to be proficient in a fighting system.

I know someone that's completely untrained in any form of fighting, he
stomped the ass of a TKD black belt that continually picked on him,
train all you want, the proficiency means nothing if your opponent has
more determination or feels he has more to lose

I agree 100%. I know many black belts who can't actually fight and the average thug would probably tear them apart. Mindset and intent is a big part of any violent encounter.

Re: Any martial artists here? [Re: ShroomPuncher]
    #18752276 - 08/24/13 04:31 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I had an altercation with a former roomie that was also a black belt, he'd
won dozens of competitions and had a huge trophy collection, he and several
of his friends decided they were going to jump me but he was the only one to
step up, he threw several punches and some retarded roundhouse kick to the
head and none of the shit even hurt, I asked them to all meet me in a more
public place so the everyone could see the bunch of them get beat but they
didnt show... seems they were afraid and that's why they needed a group, if
I started winning or even fighting back then they all jump in

one of the guys was someone I grew up with, we hung out together for years
and he took me to this little ambush, I've seen him twice since then, he
walked into the pool room I was working at, saw me and walked out, the
second time was at a grocery store, I started to walk toward him to say hi
and he bolted from the store, he left his groceries. apparently I used to
be a pretty vindictive person back in the day. I saw the black belt about
10 years ago, he was pretty apprehensive because of my reputation but I
hold no hard feeling against anyone. no need to carry anger around for years
