I've trained in Aikido for about 11 years. It's pretty cool stuff. It's what Steven Seagall does in his movies (although I'm not particularly a fan). It's a pretty big part of my life lately. Been training 4 days a week.

Hell yeah! And I like Seagals fight choreography, but I think he's a horrible example of an Aikidoka I'm a 4th Kyu in Ki Aikido. I've been doing it for about a year or so. Definitely one of my favorite arts; although I question some of the approaches, I love the philosophical aspects and it can be an extremely deadly art when trained appropriately but I think so many have strayed from the path that O'sensei set. What style do you do?

I train in Aikikai style. My current sensei is an old ass Vietnamese dude who is not only a master of Aikido, but also Judo, Taekwondo, and Shaolin Kung Fu. I've trained in a couple other dojos as well as having done some training and tested for my black belt in Japan. There are many different offshoots, all of them claiming to be the "true" way. I prefer to train in as many as I can. Be careful about making too many judgements of styles. There is some truth in all of them. Many people in Aikikai are as critical of the Ki Society as Ki Society people are of other styles. If you have the opportunity, you should train with whoever you can. There's something to be gained by all of them.

No doubt. My problem is actually a result of training with Ki society. I love the style but when it comes to self-defense, there's no room for over-compliance and 'catching punches' nonsense. This is how a lot of people get hurt. Trying to stand up and use their martial skill but finding out that what they've learned isn't as effective as they thought. I and a few others can differentiate what's legitimate and what's not (not to imply that it's all nonsense in Ki Aikido), but for the younger kids and others who have only trained in our dojo, they're gonna be in for a rude awakening the first time they try to defend themselves... but hopefully, their knowledge of avoidance will save them from anything. Like I said, I don't believe all styles to be like this. I'm sure Aikikai and Yoshinkan are much more effective martially. I just have my concerns with the way certain dojos in the Ki Society run stuff. Although I have heard of some badasses over in Japan who were extremely effective and martial as well... probably just a difference in dojos overall.

I'm an aspiring martial artist.  If I manage to lose enough weight I intend to enroll in martial arts training, I already picked a dojo.

Now to lose several buckets of flubber though.

If it's a good school, they'll get you where you need to be physically and enourage you every step of the way. What style is it, exactly?

And it's awesome to see so many martial artists here and the awesome styles being trained here. Very cool stuff.

hey 11 years right here. I was already doing Aikido before I even joined the Shroomery.

I'd still be careful. He's trained with the Shaolin. He can run across walls and perch himself on the ceiling above you. Last I heard his shadow didn't exist anymore since his katana is so sharp it bends light.

sunshine killed his shadow because it was too loud, it alerted his enemies to his presence

One time me and sunshine went to a gathering. It was only me and him. The eight of us smoked a xanax blunt. A smoke bomb went off and the 233 bells tied to my body went missing in less than a minute. He broke out his bankai and we plugged 4-aco, and by 4-aco I mean our penii.

Random idea but, what are your guys' thoughts on repping the Shroomery in events? I'm thinking about getting the current Shroomery logo embroidered on my Thai shorts or something of the sort. Maybe walk out to the ring / cage in a badass Shroomery hoodie. Hmm?

Good point, although it wouldn't nearly as publicly recognized as some UFC sponsors. Maybe even exclude the word "shroomery" all together; just the logo... just something fellow shroomerite martial artists and enthusiasts could appreciate.

Are there any websites that can help you find good, local dojos? OR a site that has reviews on dojos so I know which to avoid? I really dont know what to look for when searching for a "good" sensei or master. Even if I did a walk-in and saw a session go down... What am I looking for?

It can be hard to find a good school. My best results have always come from word of mouth.
Look online, read reviews of places and stuff. Places like Yelp can be pretty valuable.
Other than that my recommendations for good schools have always come through word of mouth from friends for the most part.
A lot of dojos may offer free or temp trial periods and whatnot. That lets you get a better idea of the place. But I don't think you can usually really form a good opinion based on a 10 minute visit or whatever.

A good instructor, in my opinion, will be real and up front. They'll also above and beyond to help you achieve your goals and instill a sense of confidence in you. Instructors with egos or the "My style is the best" instructors should usually be avoided. Open-minded is the way to go.

They should definitely allow you to sit in on a few classes. Most the guys I know allow you to try out a free class or even a couple of them. Just look for not just a good martial artist, but a good person... which I believe in order to be  a good martial artist you have to be a good person as well. Go with your instincts for sure. You'll know what style is for you once you study up on it a bit.

I'm a huge boxing fan. If it wasn't so bad for you, I'd be boxing recreationally every day. Huge respect for Thai kickboxers, too. Boxing and kickboxing are fucking awesome.
