Debunking decades of myths, new research says psychedelics are not linked to mental illness and may in fact have positive residual effects on users.
Comedian Bill Hicks famously said, “Wouldn't you like to see a positive LSD story on the news? To base your decision on information rather than scare tactics and superstition? Perhaps? Wouldn't that be interesting? Just for once?”
This is that story.
According to a new study published PLOS One, there is no link between the use of psychedelic drugs—specifically LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, and peyote—and a range of mental health problems. In fact, the study reports, psychedelic use is associated with a lower risk of mental health problems like psychosis, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and general psychological distress.
“Many people report deeply meaningful experiences and lasting beneficial effects from using psychedelics," researcher Teri Krebs said in a press release.
The Societal Effects of Psychedelics Examining data on more than 130,000 Americans in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's Department of Neuroscience found that the use of psychedelic drugs not only doesn’t contribute to mental illness, but also may actually have a protective effect against it.
They found that people who used psilocybin or mescaline throughout their lives, as well as people who used LSD in the past year, had lower rates of serious psychological distress, outpatient mental health treatment, and prescriptions for psychiatric medications.
“Other studies have found no evidence of health or social problems among people who had used psychedelics hundreds of times in legally protected religious ceremonies,” clinical psychologist Pål-Ørjan Johansen said.
While researchers noted that some people may have negative experiences on these drugs, they say that, at a population level, psychedelic drugs don’t live up to their stigma. About 30 million people in the U.S. have used LSD, psilocybin, or mescaline in their lifetimes, researchers said.
“Early speculation that psychedelics might lead to mental health problems was based on a small number of case reports and did not take into account either the widespread use of psychedelics or the not infrequent rate of mental health problems in the general population,” Krebs said. “Over the past 50 years, tens of millions of people have used psychedelics and there just is not much evidence of long-term problems.”

My buddy with skitz actually took LSD for the first time years ago and all it did was make him realize he has a problem. It did what no other doctor could. As of lately he started using it again and it's actually helping him come back to reality quicker when he experiences a psychotic episode. It taught him to embrace the psychosis. Psychedelics help people with mental health problems and tbh I wouldn't be surprised if everyone has a mental health problem psychedelics could help us look past (our ego).

Yeah but you don't want to be tackling mental problems when you have other things going on, I mean that might work as an alternative but I just choose to do no drugs

Psychedelic (drugs) may not be for everyone but they have the potential to help EVERYONE. I don't care if you're a crazy fucker. In the RIGHT CLINICAL SITUATION you will get nothing but an improvement on your life.

Im not going to lie, stronger psychedelics seemed to have made my mental health worse. However, cannabis helps me feel not crazy.

For the average drug user the lower risk isn't going to mean anything, there are plenty of other drugs besides psychedelics and there is always a harsh stigma around drug use. This study will be buried below yahoo answers and schizophrenia brain deterioration graphs by private med.

I agree and disagree... I went really hard on the blotters very consistently for 7 months and I felt like a straight crazy person. I couldn't go a day with out seeing/hearing/and feeling shit that wasn't their. The last time I dropped acid was May 17th and since then I feel like I've been floating down like a feather. In the short term I think it can make it really hard to integrate with normal square society and feel sane. Long term I think it has done wonders for me and made me a happier, more content, determined person!...IME at least

I recall when I went on an LSD binge, 30 hits in 3 weeks. All in solitude.
After the binge, I found symptoms of HPPD manifesting, random laughter occuring during unprecedented situations and wild mood swings that were uncontrollable. I found myself in a rather deep-seeded depression weeks after the binge that almost left me suicidal. Oh yeah, and jaw tension persisted for about 2 weeks coupled with a pronounced hyperacusis.
All in moderation my friends!
