Am I out of luck?
    #18746128 - 08/23/13 08:40 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I've been doing a ton of hunting in my area lately but I feel like I'm out of luck when it comes to finding anything psychoactive.

I live in the North Carolina mountains at an elevation of about 2800ft. Cubes do grow in NC but only closer to the coast, and rarely in the Piedmont (from what I've read.)

So that would leave me with Cearulipes and Plutonia which I've seen hide nor hair of. There are plenty of cattle fields around here (I live in an extremely rural area) and I was hoping I'd be able to find Cubes, up until I read that they don't typically grow at this elevation.

I love mycology though. Mushrooms fascinate me to no end. So not being able to find psychoactives wouldn't stop me from hunting, but it is a bit disheartening!

Can any of you experienced mycologists give me a little more insight?

I used to have a buddy that said, " there is no such thing as luck. What we perceive as luck is only preparation meeting opportunity."

That being said, just gotta keep looking. If you don't put yourself out there, you won't find anything. And once you do find em, then you'll have an idea of the territory that you need to hunt.

I would go onto google maps and look for cow pastures in south NC or even more south.
Go there.
Slay.

Solid advice fellas. Thanks for the help.

I'll have to see if I can get my room mate to take a trip down to southern NC for a hunt one of these days. I'd drive myself if I didn't have a suspended license >.>

What about panaeolus subbalteatus. Does anyone have any solid evidence that they grow in the mountains, or am I still too high up?

Also, sorry if this thread is against board rules. I used the search feature and it appears you all don't have very many users (if any) in the North Carolina mountains.

I don't think I've come across any pans in my hunts. I pretty much only hunt woods, though. My understanding is that they are a grass loving mushroom.

Thanks man! I'll definitely do a hunt soon. I have a big field in the back of my yard before it hits the woods. It's really over grown though but I'll keep my eyes open and post pictures and what not with what I find.

I've found sooooo many look-a-likes in my previous hunts but just haven't found anything psychoactive or even edible for that matter. I found a patch of a couple caerulscens look-a-likes, I was disappointed when they didn't turn out to be what I thought they were.

By the way Joust. Just noticed that I have your avatar as my wallpaper on my desktop, haha. I think it's a sign that what you've said is what I needed to hear. So, again, thanks.
