Advice for second flush
    #18745906 - 08/23/13 07:16 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi everyone,

I am very close to harvesting my first flush, but am not sure what I should do about all these pins.

Many of them are > 1 week old.

This comes from a growbox, and the instructions after first (and consecutive) harvests say:
After first escapes clean surface and remove old and dead mushrooms. Then start again from step 4 to go for the second flush!

Please note: at step 6, 8 hours full with water instead of 12 hours.

But what does old and dead mean exactly, and what surface should I be cleaning?  How can I tell a live pin vs an abort?

Should I just clear out anything larger than the smaller pins?  As you can see there are a ton of them...

:omg:
Check out that Fucking pinset!!!

It looks to be in a bag? If so add some water to the bag so it sits underneath the ... Cake/block.

don't flood it out, just like a quarter cup or something. That Fucking pinset though man... Awesome:awepreciation:!

I would pick all the big fruits and leave the small pins. If the pins wont grow anymore (aborts) then pick them all and save them (they're still very potent!). Fill the bag with water over the top of the block, close the bag and let it sit overnight or 12 hours then empty the water out and fan/mist appropriately.

Live pins have a dark brown/gold cap still and abort caps turn VERY dark black

Oh that sucks. Most of those will or already have aborted. Dudes gonna be cleaning for a while.

Would you suggest picking them all then before trying for the second flush?

I'm totally new to this and so far there are 3 quite different answers (though all appreciated) to this thread ).

After you notice no growth in pins for a day or two, and especially if they darken heavily, they have aborted. Search a few pics of aborted on here.

But yes once you determine they are aborts, pick them, then dunk your sub in a manner probably already described.

Not awesome. The opposite. Look at all the aborts.

There are many (unhealthy) ways to "force" a huge pinset...but that thing isn't worth a dime until they mature.

Every time I used to see pinsets like that, I'd be pissed.

OP, make a shotgun terrarium and fruit it properly.

You have almost no FAE in that bag. That is why you ended up with two hundred aborts and five fruits.

Save the aborts though, the potent little fuckers that they tend to be. Make ya a nice tincture of them and keep in the freezer for years.

I see, that's the other side of the coin I guess.
You really give alot of great insight Frank. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I'll just pick em all and dunk I guess.

Is this likely to adversely affect the second flush a lot since I expect it will damage the top of the cake as I pick em?

:thanx:

I've seen a lot by this point, this has been an obsession of mine for years. I'm just giving back to the community for helping me

If I actually told you how many monotubs I've run over the last 2.5 years...or how high my monthly production can reach if I want it to...you certainly wouldn't believe me

No telling really, you gotta get rid of them though.

Pins will re-grow from stumps and divots, they won't grow on aborts though.

I would just move it to the SGFC for the second flush.

A strait verm casing can thin your pinset for the second flush.

That makes no sense at all

If anything the high RH that the surface retains will encourage more pins.

You are witnessing multispore randomness.

Remember my bacterial pinset debacle? a casing gave me thinner pinset, larger fruits and less aborts

Oh, OP, I would not dunk that for a second flush.

If anything it is too wet.

You had a FAE problem, not a moisture issue.

One trial does not a fact make. Plus your tray was fucked and suffering to begin with.

Multispore randomness. Possible contam. No basis for giving advice on the grounds that it made "fewer pins" after the verm casing.

It would have made fewer pins anyways. It was a partially spent substrate.

High RH at the surface = better conditions for pinning.
