frozen substrate......what do u think?
    #1874535 - 09/02/03 03:03 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

hello all...
i was wondering if the substrate of the pf tek method can be preserved through freezing in the freezer....do you think the substrate (verm, brf, water) would be usable once defrosted at a later date?
please let me know
thanks...
increbdibll....

no, i mean just freezing the substrate for later use.
as in , the brf and verm mixture in proper ratio, frozen in container, to be sterilized and used at a later time...
please let me know.
thanks
incred.

It should work. Freezing does not stop contaminants but it slows them down so if you sterilize the substrate after defrosting it might be OK.

Actually, I think it's a great idea. As our wise man zeronio stated:
Quote:

Which I believe is very true indeed, so it'd be a nice way to preserve some sterilized substrate in case you're not able to inoculate it immediately after sterilization/cooling down.

But I wonder, deanofmean, why do you think it wouldn't work? As far as I know you're a very experienced member of this community, so I'm really interested in arguments as to why it wouldn't work. Not trying to critisize you here, don't get me wrong, just interested

yeah thanks for the input....
however, the bottom line, will it work or not.
b/c my friend doesnt want to innoculate a batch in like 'dead' substrate, if thats whats the freezing light do to it.....
please let me know

didn't say it wouldn't work .
i just don't see any benefit .
don't add water until you are ready to sterilize .
my .02
freezing and thawing, the Ramsie seal will soak up moisture .
